additional drill press table?

I've got a hand-me-down drill press from my father-in-law. It's an ok piece, nothing fancy and certainly suitable for the general stuff I'll do with it. It's appears to be a somewhat generic Taiwanese piece. Labeled "Guardian Power BDM-58-5SP".

I've got a cross slide vise that I've used on it. It's tedious bolting and unbolting it when I want to use the table alone. I've recently added a drill press table and it's even more tedious switching things around.

I'm thinking of picking up another table, but have had no luck finding much for "General Power".

The table is about 12" across and uses a 1-3/4" center post into the clamp. Are these tables somewhat generic in size for this post?

Any suggestions on where to buy just this one part?

Try going to Sear's and measure the post on their current DP offerings. If the post is the same size then get the full model number and try ordering one off of Searspartsdirect.com.

There are a million of them out there. Watch craigslist and confirm the post diameter before you go get it.

And yes, I just scrapped out a Chicom version a few months back.

Good suggestion. Assuming, of course, that they have any on the floor that have that kind of table. Supposedly they have this one nearby:

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-12in...sellerId=SEARS&prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=G2

Which would be this part:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/S34985-87/0009/124.html

Hmmm, one for a Grizzly is just $22, which seems more reasonable for a hunk of cast iron.

Make up a small table that you can clamp into the vise for quick small jobs. Then you will not have to remove the x/y table as often.

I already have an auxiliary table. What I also have is a cross-slide vice that's tedious to reinstall. Going back and forth using the table alone, the aux table or the vice, that'd be easier with another table for the vice alone.

Or I just get another table, one that swaps out with the simple loosening of the clamp handle and lifting it out.

So, yeah, if I "can't" find another table it'd be necessary to make the swap as easy as possible. But I'm not at the "can't" point yet. I'm asking for suggestions on sourcing a spare table, so let's stick with that.

I can't believe that no one has made the obvious suggestion made so often on this site: buy another drill press so you can keep the table mounted on it!

I have wanted to do the same thing.
I bought another drill press with a bad motor and was going to take its table and add it to my DP and the Collumns are different diameters.
Just look around and see if you can find a donar DP for its table

My drill press has a Palmgren rotary cross slide table mounted directly to the column. T-slots are way easier to deal with than through slots and any drill press vise becomes a cross slide vise. These used to be sold through industrial tool sellers. I don't know if they are still available but if not, you could mount a standard cross slide table to your existing setup.

Hmm, the post in mine measures 44mm. But the bigger issue (literally) is the vise, it's a bit too large for those tables. Now, I could jump down a different rabbit hole and get a new vise to fit a new table... but not just yet...

You could also weld a proper sized piece of pipe to a plate and drill the plate for your cross slide. You would have to take care to keep it level but it's a pretty simple project.

You could make an adapter plate for the grizzly.

Turns on the crappy Craftsman at Sears is 44mm, but it's made so incredibly cheaply there ain't no way I'd pay $70 for it. It's barely more than pressed tinfoil by the weight of it.

Stopped by the Woodworkers club and checked two of theirs, one was 46mm (General) and the other 47mm (Jet). So no matches there.
