A lot of the US made adjustable wrenches are WF clones. Some of them like the Craftmans have WF stamped at the bottom of the handle.

Bingo. Craftsman adjustable wrenches are a great deal. I like them very much. They're cheap, strong and very comfortable. I believe they are or were the exact same as Proto. I can't remember right now. If you scroll down to post #8 on this thread I made, I have a picture of all my adjustable wrenches and what I like or don't like about them. Granted there aren't any 18" in the picture, they are all the same design just scaled up or down. The 15" in the picture is a newer Crescent and although the small ones aren't great, the large one works pretty nice. They aren't as nice as the old USA made stuff though.. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=315245

I understand that you need the wrench for work but, if you have the time and are able to, hit up a flea market or two. There are usually a lot of USA Crescent and Craftsman adjustables floating around. A few years ago, I picked some Crescent 1920's era steel adj. for $10 or less. They were in very good shape, will probably last forever and are just plain tough. I also have some newer USA "Crestoloy" Crescents and Craftsman USA that I bought on sale or closeout that seem to be much better than the import stuff being sold today. Those also appear at the flea market for good prices. All together I have adjustables ranging from 4 inches to 18 inches including some duplicates and probably have less than $100 total invested.

Unless you have flea markets with a lot of tool dealers, I believe that finding anything over 12 inches is going to be dicey if you need it for work now. USA quality 8, 10, 12 inch adjustable wrenches are common finds, 4 and 6 inch along with larger than 12 inches rare around here. May be a different story if your area has a more industrial heritage. Now I wouldn't have a problem buying a large Japanese made adjustable but if I needed one now I would just order a USA made one from Harry Epsteins and call it a day.

You just don't find large ones used all that often unless you live somewhere with lots of heavy industry.
The Western Forge made ones at HJE are a great buy for what they are asking. I like Irega wrenches a lot but the difference in quality to the WF made is going to be minimal at 18"

I've seen 18 and 24 inch at Englishtown Flea Market in NJ on more than a few occasions and purchased a 15 inch there a few years ago. I had already gotten the 18 Crescent from my local HD on closeout a year or so before that.

Columbus and Collingwood also have tools and tool dealers.
