Yeah, but they want full retail for them; wait until a good sale at Sears.

I wonder if GW is flooding the market...perhaps a result of finding themselves upside down.

No citations, just a hunch.

Maybe he means that they are making more tools than there have a market for? I'm not really sure either.

That's good to know. I consider the Great Neck tools a waste, even for a weekend mechanic like me. I have one set of GN wrenches and all they do is take up space in my toolbox. They do have a nice polish but not a single wrench fits the fastner snuggly.

Next time I'm in there I want to look at the GW socket sets and ratchets. I'm real curious about them and how they compare to my C-man and SKs.

Finding themselves upside down? Did I miss something being sick?

Not necessarily, just a reference to the general economic situation these days.

Not enough sales at the normal retailers...adding more retailers has to help, right?

OK I thought that might be what you meant. Been pretty out of it today so I was thinking maybe I missed a new disaster.

I saw the GW tools at Advance this past August, and I wasn't impressed with the price. I asked if the tool were qualified for my volume discount, and when they scanned them in using my account information, the price didn't change. I told the manager that the prices on GW were less at Sears, and that I would continue to buy them there. She said she would mention it to the GM, since I wasn't the only one to make the comment. So far, the prices haven't dropped, and it appears that they haven't sold any tools.

It seems like that is their business style.
The wrenches are there for impulse gotta have buyers. Or the guy who just had a wrench break and needs one now. These folks will pay full retail plus just to get the tool.

Heck the truck guys used to love me when I needed a tool now.

Yea, thats the only reason I have bought stuff there. Sunday night at 8:00, and I need something, and they are there.

They needed to do something, their tool aisle looked like it belonged in a grocery store.
:lol_hitti

I'm going to check out Advanced just to play with the tools. Hopefully they have a good line up of stuff.

I stopped into Advance today to check out the supply of GW stuff. I picked up the same socket Wrencher did, but the first one I picked up had a huge flaw in the knurling, almost looked like it was hit with a grinder and then chromed over:wtf:. The other 2 on the shelf were perfect.

I was thinking about the 24" breaker bar but it just didn"t feel right with sharp edges around handle, etc.

I did get a #2 4" phillips screwdriver to try out since my Snappy set is just about got me at wits end :headscrat 4 out of the 8 have broke like tooth picks (brittle as hell).

The Gear Wrench stuff I've bought over the last couple of years at Lowes and Sears all said it was made in Taiwan if I remember correctly. I stopped in Advance tonight, everything I saw there said it was made in China. When did they change?

Not everything is made in our China facility. We moved ratcheting wrenches over a year ago. Both Taiwan and China are fully owned Danaher plants - the quality will be the same out of both.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, Thanks for the info. I recently bought another set of ratcheting wrenches from Sears and it still said made in Taiwan, it must have been old stock. I looked at your new ratchets at Advance last night, they look pretty nice.

The screwdriver set i saw at Advance was Taiwan made. Not sure about the rest. They did not have the roto ratchets or prybars.
Their Ampro stuff was mostly 75% off. I picked up a hose clamp pliers set cheap.
I had heard awhile ago that Advance was going to change to SK.

I guess it just happened that everything I looked at there last night was from China, I looked at some ratchets, socket holders, extensions, wrench set, etc. Probably 8 or 9 packages.
I'm going to look more next time I go in. I might buy one of the socket holders to test it and see how it holds up before buying more.

Steve,
Are there more store front retailers in the future??
Sear would be nice!! I know they have catalog only but I like to look before buying. And I want a 3/8 roto head ratchet, but I want to check it out before buying.

Roto ratchet is at Sears stores now- stop by and take a look. We also have a limited line of GearWrench at select Sears stores, with the potential to expand.

Happened to be at Advance last night and wandered down the tool aisle to look at the GearWrench selection. Holy ****! First of all, I never knew there were so many types of screwdrivers. I didn't count them all, but my guess was there were 50-75 different ones? Give me about 6 different ones and I can take apart almost anything. :) Excellent selection of pliers as well. I guess I was expecting a very limited showing. And the stuff (even the sets) weren't behind the counter, but right there in the aisle so you could touch & feel everything.

I was impressed with the overall selection - even individual sockets. Prices were, from what I remember, about the same as the 'standard' prices @ Amazon. Not the inflated list price they use, but the normal price.

BTW-if anyone uses the Big Industrial Wipes (yellow can), they're on special for $5 ea. Best hand wipes I've ever used for a quick clean up.

Those wipes are the bomb bay!!

Yeah, I've only had a chance to visit one Advance lately, and the new GW stuff was behind the counter :(

The prices seemed to be pretty fair, at least as far as parts stores go.

Advance has several different layouts, but here's a behind-the-counter version of the new GearWrench program.

Take a look!

Steve! Thanks for the pics! Unfortunately, I do not have a Advance Auto Parts store in my area (New Mexico); again thanks for the layout shot! :) While not asked to cross your NDA; is Gearwrench have plans to expand like this to other markets and vendors? With such a broad line of tools now.. it only makes sense that you need better retail presence out there, to sell all these tools you guys have created!

Danaher makes Craftsman ratcheting wrenches, are they real all USA components? Where is the factory that makes the USA ones, If you have tooling here, why not make them all here???The price isn't much different. I have a few GW tools from a pinch, but avoid them in general and buy USA.

Billy Advance Auto is a part of Parts America. You might check there. Steve can probably let us know if the Parts America outlets have them as well.

Everytime I order off line from Advance I get the parts from Parts Americas Glendale Az depot.
