In my opinion, there is no better lighting fixture than those made by Barnlight Electric. If you've never messed with one of... To read the rest of this blog entry from The Garage Journal, click here.

I really like those, do you know if they come in dark green to match the three I already have, of course mine came from a old building, gotta love CL at times.

No offense, but that place looks like a fire disaster waiting to happen...
You really ought to get some sheetrock over that foam board

I recently bought a pair to light my back yard / patio, after doing a long search for options, and was similarly impressed with the build quality.

Mine are wall mounted, and I was hoping that I would be able to modify the cast mounting plates to use four screws instead of two, but the casting wasn't such that I could just drill a few holes. Once everything was mounted I think they'll be fine though.

Greatest part... Made in Canada, but not available in Canada from Amazon.

Yet again, Canadians get screwed over by the wonder that is Amazon.

Home Depot sells a similar item for wallmount. It doesn't come with a gooseneck pole, but a straight 12 inch pole. A few years ago they were $40 , last year they were $60, now they are listed at $78. Guess many of us found this cheaper source so HD decided to increase their price to correspond with our demand. Uggggg.

For those on a budget check out Chicken Brooder Lights. You can get the whole thing prewired for less than ten bucks, the shade is aluminum and the fixture is rated for high watts.

I thought a traditional Hot Rodder from Texas would have used old hub caps for light reflectors though. :)

I've got one of these hanging on the fron of my gaarage. Mat not be the same quality, but the prie can't be beat at Menards!
http://www.menards.com/main/search.html?search=barn+light

I also bought a few of the #3562044 from Menards. I was planning on bending conduit into a gooseneck shape to mimic the fancier barn lights and painting a nicer color than the gray. Again - hard to beat for the price.

The Menards #3562046 looks to be the same as the Amazon unit for $11 less.

How many of those would it take to get a decent light level (say 50fc) in a 40'x60' (16' walls) steel building?

Thanks.

Hell if I know... I'm starting with 12 in a 32 x 40 building using 55w CFLs...

Isn't it funny how we can obsess over something most folks never give a second thought to? I thought you would be going for those new LED models from Big *** Fan.

Guys, keep in mind if you are using those lights outside and live in a cold climate, you may not like the results of a CFL in winter. I put one in one of mine and saw a severe reduction in light.

Has anyone ever used a stainless bowl as a reflector?
There are some interesting shape, deep bowls that would work and look great.
I would think that it would be fairly easy just to adapt these to a electrical box or make them hang by cords.
I was planning on doing this but am not far enough along in the build to worry about lights right now.

I attend many conferences with occasional luncheons, and I have always thought about using those stiff stainless steel plate covers in my future lighting scheme. I have even seen them in multiple sizes and shapes (round, square, rectangle, etc.)

And while they can be had for <$20 each, there are the obvious additional costs of a rated lampholder and cord/conduit.

Even with the minor amount of 'engineering' involved, plus the grounding requirement, I still think they're a viable option for a quality, lasting, and tasteful fixture.

I got a real good deal on some lights off CL. Have 22 of them in my 40x60. (Partially due to office). And am using CFLs. Take a look at my build and you can see how much they put out.

I just hung my first... Honestly, it looks puny... I'm hoping it will look better when they are all up.

I've gotten 12 up in a sort of grid pattern now... Looks much better... Kind of a modern gallery look to it.

^^^ That looks great, Ryan! ^^^

There is definitely strength in numbers, plus the wow factor!

Now, you should take and post a few pics of them lit up when it's pitch dark out -- you know, at 5:45...

Ryan,

Why didn't you go w/ HID instead? at that scale of lighting, I think HID would be more appropriate (cost benefit in long term) and looks better.

That's a big and tall shop.

Can't argue any of your points... However, I'm on a strict initial budget and needed lighting now, so here I am.

In any case, I'm really liking the look now that they are up... And I tested light output last night in the dark - I'm really happy with the light...

The one advantage I do have with this current setup over using say three HID fixtures is that I have more consistent light spread.

There's no sense of going back but here's my insight that may benefit other members:

I think the difference in cost is negligence relatively speaking to the scale of your project. Base on my analysis, you would need four pulse-start fixtures (250w rated @ 120V, <3A) + four bulbs (150W, 13,000lm each, 4000-5000K, 20K hrs life).

Your current cost is about $800 and HID cost would be about $900. At that HID setup, you get 10K lumens more than your current setup. The down side to have HID is the warm up and restrike that can take up to 5min (typically a min) and 10min (typically 5min), respectively. However, the benefit of using HID fixture is to have see-through acrylic that can shine upward and downward. The energy use is about the same or less for HID.

If you start using HID that's above 150W, there's more cost benefit. 200W+ are much more efficient than 150W setups.

I personally went to IKEA and picked up some similar looking products for much cheaper and then painted the outside to make them match my color scheme. I am not using them outside though.
