So, with all this work on the old place, I am considering pouring a new concrete floor over the existing- thoughts?

I'd be very leery of going that route. I would bet significant $$$ that there wasn't enough prepwork done before the original slab was poured, since you've stated both the original and top coats have cracked. I know it would **** to tear it all out but it sounds like the best way to do it.

I'll be following along though to see what you do! I'm a fan of old buildings being saved, hence my shop build lol. There's just some history and character in old buildings that can't be replaced.

Yeah, so... I kinda dug down behind the garage... There's two massive 3" slabs poured- I seriously doubt any reinforcing was done and this has led to the issue. I can see into some of the breaks of the concrete and there's literally nothing in between. So.... now.... hmmm.....

Well that *****. Probably no rebar in the concrete and just poured over unprepared soil.

Hate to say it but it sounds like all that concrete needs to be removed. At least you should be able to get some machinery in there instead of doing it all by hand.

Supposedly its going to rain here today, tomorrow and Friday.
We shall see.
Trying to get something done every day in the shop. Power issues are raising a very ugly problem left over from days gone by.
Frustration with outdated infrastructure.

Ok, I'll be THAT guy:

Why the wire mesh & bondo when the right way is to cut out the rust-through and weld in replacement metal? Hell, even if you don 't weld there are adhesives for repairing metal these days that could work for this. You're just pushing a bigger rust problem down the road for yourself or another owner.

That rig has 294+++ miles on it. It get's run around South Texas, run through brush, tagged with mesquite thorns and such so.... yeah... bondo and mesh? Absolutely.
Crappy paint job?
Thanks Ford.
Remedy there?
Brick red bedliner.
I am that guy.
See the profile pic? Yeah- I am that guy that is **** about his chrome and the way the Harley looks.
I am also the guy that dropped the back seats in the Hex down so he could load and 350+ pound feral hog up and haul it in for processing... but hey....
And I will be the last owner. I will run it till the wheels fall off, the duck tape fails and the only thing left is the bondo.

So, if we are playing along.... this week's installment of what I am going to do on the weekend includes:
Finish sanding/shaping of the bondo job on the Hex roof....
While it is SoTex- and summer is all but upon us, I am working on a vertical barrel stove idea. I might just start cutting out some stuff for that and.... moving bikes and such around in the garage.
I am likely (STILL BEING THAT GUY) going to harvest some pallet wood so that I can build another set of Dutch doors for the garage.
Electrician was out this morning.. @#(*%&@#(*& expensive....
Lights are all on again.
Still that guy.... Still gonna do this all on my terms and no one else's.

Good morning people. We're getting a little rain in Southern Texas! Give thanks for the blessings. Been quite a while since we saw this stuff falling from the sky.

Best wishes for your spouse to make a good recovery from surgery.

Good for you for keeping up the homestead. That's impressive 6 generations under the roof along the way.

If you can do it, I'd remove the old slabs, compact & fill, lay in rebar, and pour a thickened slab.

I see the Voyager was replaced by a Twin-Cam. Everyone around here wanting a H-D wants Milwaukee 8 bikes. There are dozens of Twin-Cams for sale, maybe hundreds. The tri-county area from Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-W Palm Beach is ~7 million, and it's 12 months/year riding, so I suspect saying 'hundreds of H-D's for sale' isn't exaggerating. The economy is good.

One of my former co-workers in Palm Beach County (FL, yes the county where POTUS #45 lives) has a probably circa 2006 Fat Boy and I think it doesn't have 4,000 miles on it. He is recovering from a triple coronary bypass after a heart attack, and he wants to get rid of the bike. I think if he sold it for $5K he would be doing good in the local market. It's got a Screaming Eagle kit on the engine, not sure if it's larger displacement or not, over stock.

She's already light years ahead of where we were. The surgery restored sensation in her hand, leg and her motor skills in both areas have improved.
Swelling in her neck is starting to fall (point of entry for the surgery).
Prices on used bikes down here are ridiculous. Local HD dealer is insane. I really dig the Road Glide I have. Probably will buy another bike, but that one stays. Still have my Honda Shadow from uh, a long time ago.
For now, the floor is gonna stay as is- disappointing - but health concerns, life events and such are coming first. Been doing some small stuff out there, trying to get my stuff together. Likely post some pics Sunday or Monday.

Thanks for playing along here in my part of the world.

Coming back VERY late to this thread.

Yes PD, I think you're right! Probably a lot more times than I do it- good enough is good enough. I tend to overthink and overdo some of my projects - though I do fewer projects now than I ever have.

You said sometime in the past - Shouldn't I be somewhere nailing up wallpaper!

That old rig has served me well. I might, stress MIGHT, hand it off to my 20-something year old son. But-THAT causes me anxiety and all kinds of things. It's my RIG!

Okay guys... not sure where to post this. Given the limited amount of floor space I have, I am thinking about a barrel stove for the garage/shop. But, was thinking of doing a vertical one. Does anyone have experience with this?
