Air compressor...guard or NO guard

If it isn't right fix it. I just took 2 or 3 hrs to build one vs putting it off till "later"

You can source some rubber sheets and make some 'feet' or what ever you want to call it to quiet things down.

The guard is to not only keep people's dingers out of the belts and pullies but also things that may fall and hit it and get caught up in the works.
If you do not have a concern that that could happen then leave it off

My old portable is so old, it came without a guard. It was an accessory I think, not sure (I bought the compressor new in about '70 or so) I'm the only one who ever uses is and usually to put a head charge on a well tank or some such, so its not like its used where children or stupid people are running around it

My compressor I bought with only one piece of the guard. Its in the corner and the pulleys are against the wall so i'm not worried.
Man that brings back memories. Years ago my brother-in-law bought an old small compressor at a weekend yard sale. He liked it but it was rusty, the outlet pipe leaked, one of the wheels was broken, needed a handle, etc.
He brought it over to me to see what I thought. So I did him a favor and cleaned it up, painted it, new wheels, bent a handle from soft conduit and put a steering wheel wrap I had laying around on the handle, new wheels, pressure gauge and belt. The next weekend he came over to get it. He couldn't get over the difference. We went into the garage, I plugged it, he stepped back without looking into a long handled push broom. The broom fell forward into the %$##$$^^% compressor. The belt caught it and pulled the end between the belt and the pulley and bent the pulley. It hadn't been running for more than a minute. I couldn't have planned it better. I told him to go to Sears and buy a compressor. End of that story.

I made an expanded metal guard for mine. Actually out of a piece of that white wire shelving. With my luck a piece of stock or the like would end up between the belts and the pulleys causing much $ in damage.

If a machine that starts automatically while unattended and has movable parts, it will get a guard.

If you're letting your dinger get that close to an air compressor pulley then you need to keep it in your pants.

I too have an old compressor that never had a guard. It is unplugged when not in use and is not used that much. Pulleys are up against the wall. If I had children around, I would worry. I don't and access to it is difficult.
That said, if it had a guard that rattled, I would tend to fix the rattle sooner or later. Inner tube rubber cut to washer size, maybe doubled over, and put on the guard mounting bolts. Minimal time and I always have some rubber scraps in a box for such occasions.
