Air compressor question..........

My air compress use to stop filling the tank at 150PSI, now it goes all the way up to 165:eyecrazy:

I am worried that something might happen. Should I replace this gauge, regulator, or something else?? Or is it just OK to let it go and keep using it??

Have you adjusted the pressure switch to have it cut off at a higher pressure? The pressure switch is what cuts power to the motor when the pressure in the receiver has reached the high setting. If you haven't touched the switch, it may be starting to fail in which case I would replace with a like unit.

My Craftsman which looks to be nearly the same model except years newer is doing the same thing. Idk how much you use yours, but maybe they need to be broken in?

I have been using this compressor for over 10 years. I bought it used in, I think in 2005.
I just don't want something dangerous to happen. I understand the emergency valve should release if the pressure gets to high, but it is just starting to scare me!

Is there a tag or stamp on the tank anywhere stating the psi rating (It will be like 30psi higher than the advertised pressure)? What is the rating on the pop-off valve?

If you have a Rural King in Columbus, I bought a brand new pressure switch for like $14 a year or so ago. I replaced the pop-off too and wanna say it was like $10.

Is your current switch adjustable???

Replace the gauge, and get a fluid filled if you can the vibration kills the cheap one's that come on them. and the pop off is set to go off before it will harm anything but I'm betting a new gauge will solve your problems, and if you want to test your pop off valve let the compressor fill up then pull on the ring that is on the valve until it dumps pressure let go and it should pop back in place. then you know it works

I'd suggest that you swap the two gauges in the picture. If the numbers stay the same then you have a bad pressure switch. If it still cuts off at 165 the pressure switch is bad. If it now cuts off at 150 then you have a bad gauge. Or if you have enough fittings laying around to plumb both gauges into the same port do that and see if they follow each other.

Sounds like the shut off pressure adjustment screw may have moved through vibration and needs re-calibration. Try manually opening the safety pressure release valve. If the release valve works as it should you have little to worry about.
Also, always remember to regularly drain the moisture in the tank to prevent rusting out the bottom of the tank.

I didn't even know that there was an adjustment screw. I will have to take a look at that tonight and see if I can find it. I will test the safety valve also. that is something that I have never done, and probably should of!

Usually, the pressure cut-off switch is where the adjustment screw is found. The pressure cut-off switch is an electrical device that physically controls the electrical power going to the motor by opening and closing electrical contacts, all this is often contained in a small metal box with a removable cover and has wires coming from it.
The safety pressure valve is often made of brass and has a spring return round finger pull ring. Give this ring a firm tug and see if the valve releases air pressure. Release the pull ring and the valve should close without any air leaks. The pressure safety release valve should be checked at least once a year for proper maintenance.

I was in my Buds lac ethe other day and fix the comp. It was near 200 before it shut down. I backed it off to 165 as they really dont use it. I wondered if the spring gets weaker?
