I have an air hose reel like pictured, it's missing the crank handle & I plan on using it at the volunteer warehouse for running our pneumatic carton sealer . I plan on putting it up high on the wall so it's not in our way. that would make the winding up by hand impossible.
So I am going to add an electric motor to it, I'm thinking an old variable speed corded drill .
I found a 13mm socket fits the inside of the shaft nicely. so after annealing the POC socket I drilled and tapped it to 10/32 and secured it to the reel. 'using my cordless drill & a 1/4 hex X 3/8 adapter I was able to wind the hose up nicely . just have to find a cheap corded variable speed drill now . the plan is to hand reel the hose out, and have a push button to power the drill to wind the hose in.
also looking at a power window motor at Princess auto, but then I would have to get a 12v power supply . not sure , just a work in progress that I thought I would share

Like the idea and would do it for my use in a heart beat but just stating this because of how our world is now a days who will be using it? With out anti kick thinking twisting racking your wrist and with out guards could be an injury issue with someone putting a claim against you/the warehouse. Just a thought.

Wiper motor will have 2+ speeds and park. Might be more durable than a window motor. Still need an old 12 batt from a power tool or something. Thinking a toggle SW with 2 positions, speed 2, speed 1 and off/park. Wiring will take some trial and error unless you have an old car make/model you know and have the motor and its dash SW. I know I could do it with old VW parts.

yes, there's always the safety aspect of home made things. I figure if I throttle the drill down to just able to wind the hose, there's little risk... and I will have a hose stopper about 8' from the end so it will stop there. but valid point.
the only people that will use it will be me& another guy that's very competent.
but I think your point is very valid. and I will think on it.
I can always use it at home.

The Cobbler a 12V cordless tool [drill/driver with a transmission would be ideal] that is battery non replaceable/inoperable, [obsolete/more expensive than the driver etc.]. You could set the drivers' clutch to "stunned" [#3? LOL!] to prevent injuries. An adapter can be sourced pretty easily: https://www.princessauto.com/ac-plu...le-power-station-9091034/product/PA0009091091 [15V @4A] (surplus center for our US neighbors?) Harry

Bicycle crank, a sprocket attached to reel, chain, mount to wall at a comfortable height.
or just get a retractable reel

Ok guys. after thinking about this more.... and I just recently had a brain storm
I've got a small 120 volt hoist that I have never used. bought it at princess auto . I think I'm going to re work that for a drive . powered in & out. has a stop switch when the cable hits the end it shuts down . I can re work that to the air hose . it has a nice comfortable speed to it when winding in & out .

here's the small hoist I am sacrificing for this project . I'm actually not going to do any harm to the hoist & various parts , I can always resurect it back on the slim chances that I want to.
here it is taken apart . the hex shaft will fit into the air hose reel and drive it . I will probably slip a socket over it that is fastened to the tube of the reel so I don't have to alter the shaft

no pictures but I have a 13MM socket that fits the shaft of the hoist and fits nicely inside the reel axle shaft . The plan is to machine off the drive end of the socket so the hoist shaft runs thru it , and weld the socket to the axle shaft. that way the hoist shaft is not compromised in any way
