Air Supplier Respirators

I do powder coating as a side job and use a liquid stripper to remove old powder coating that contains methylene chloride; nasty stuff. I have the tank outside and am quick to add/remove parts, and can usually do that holding my breath standing upwind; I know, stupid.....(and I have a degree in safety & health!) I may only do this 1-2/month as I sandblast what I can. I do wear all the needed PPE to protect skin as it will burn on contact! Looking at air supplied respirators since cartridge types won't work and have seen some reasonably priced ones(= offshore) online. They have their own compressor for air supply (not SCBA) that could be placed upwind and away from the tank. Don't need top of the line since it's occasional use. Anybody have experience with these "reasonable" air supplied respirators?

We use them at some of our plants. 3M,i believe, and I think they are somewhere around 1500ish.

The guys that wear them love them.

Its your lungs... Don't go cheap. And get fit tested. An I'll fitting respirator can be very dangerous as they give a false sense of security

Thanks Mike. Believe me, I'll know if it doesn't fit right. This stuff is smelly! Some of the ones I was looking at are under $250.

That's a hell of a difference! As long as they take good filters, it might be worth a go. I'd never use an off brand filter though.

If I could get the air source away from the tank, I really wouldn't need a filter as I'm outside and the hazardous environment is when I standing over the tank situating the parts. Literally just a few minutes and then closed up

The units I am talking about have a filter and blower that you wear on a belt, at your lower back.

Yup, those are the ones I'm looking at. I was thinking I could extend the hose 6' + and put the blower at the other end away from me. Thoughts?

I have a Hobby air that I modified with a much better filter for flow.
I never put the compressor in an area that would have a fume hazard.
I have a 100 ft. airline that keeps everything out of harms way, it also at least doubled the air flow to the mask.

I have a home brew supplied air system I use a 3M 7XXX full face respirator and a CPAP machine with 50' of plastic conduit as hose up to a belt where I use rubber oxygen hose for the mask. I spray paint with isocyanates and have had no issues. I know it may be controversial to roll your own, I did quite a bit of testing before I started using it with chemicals. Is it as good as a factory made supplied air system, can't say, I never smell any paint. I wear a hooded jacket and disposable coverall when painting.

Not endorsing this but, youtube has plenty of examples.

Interesting home brew. Since you breath through one for 8 hours at night you would think it should work fine.

Build from scratch, I purchased a few Gast pumps for projects approx $100.00 (Ebay), all were never used. Seen facemasks show up on Ebay.
