Bill:
I’ve hunted all over CL in search of a deal on tanks but no luck whatsoever. I’m definitely one kf them guys that enjoys the search for the best “deal”. But i also don’t mind to soend a fee extra bucks to support a small business. I could’ve easily just ordered the torch kit I wanted online at a heck of a price but really wanted to keep my money local and also have the relationship with my local weld shop. My wifey just bought me a Hobart 140 Mig so I’m needing a tank for it, too.

Yeah, I also think you’re confused....When and where did I ask for help? And what did I ask help doing?

I got that your OP was basically a rant. Some people assume these type of rants also mean you're asking for advice. :D

Ahhh, gotcha! Well, Yeah...it was a rant, not a request for assistance. I was just shocked by how much more they were charging and shared that experience here. Anyone would expect that something you purchase at a small local shop to cost a little extra because you just can’t compete with these large online retailers but, not $340 extra on a $500 product. That’s an “I don’t really wanna sell it” price.

I've been into my local Airgas precisely twice in the past 24 years. Both times I bought a couple of wire brushes because Praxair didn't have the style I needed.

Well I picked up the Miller/Smith professional series heavy duty torch set, 25’ of hose, the Smith regulators, a few extra tips, and purchased the 120cf bottles of acetylene and oxygen. So I’m good to go now. Ready to start tinkering!

"supporting a local business" by expecting them to price match, an on-line retailer - who might be selling bulk welders, out of their garage, does not seem like very much support.

Sheesh...some of you need to read things a little closer.

Nowhere did I say I expected them to price match the online pricing. I specifically said however, that one would expect to pay more at a local shop and, that was fine with me. My complaint was that Airgas expected to charge $340 OVER an online price. That’s just unrealistic.

I have to agree Airgas is expensive. When I bought my last welder a Miller bobcat 250 efi called the local LWS and they gave me expensive price. Then I called Cyberweld gave a good price and in stock I said I wanted to pick it up and they gave me hassle beacause they only have loading dock and would load it into my truck. Called Praxair they matched Cyberweld price and order it and loaded into my truck off there loading dock with no problem. Then I happen to go the the original LWS for something else and on the counter they there monthly flyer with the same welder I bought from Praxair for the same price they quoted me a $1,000.00 more on the phone.

Here Matheson is the major player with Praxair second. Both have been fine to me, but, I live in a major city, Phoenix, AZ. You can't spit in my neck of the woods (Deer Valley) and NOT hit a welding supply store. There are literally three within a one block area. Phoenix Welding, Praxair and Vern Lewis.
