Allen Bradley 440 to 220 Conversion

So I have this big Clausing drill press. Hooked up a Phas-A-Matic converter. The starter box between the motor and power switch is 440. How do I make it work on 220?

You'll need to re-tap the control transformer for 240V input and change the motor lead configuration to the 240V connection.

Sounds like you need to rewire the control transformer to operate on 240V, also the motor will need to be reconnected to the lower 240V.

This is assuming there is a control transformer. If the OP would post photos it would be helpful.

I believe the part with #69A288 on it needs to be changed for 220 operation.

Is the motor reconnect able to 240 volts?

Take a pic of the motor nameplate and post here...how many wires are in the motor j box? And the part youre referring to is called a coil which is part of the starter and yes it will need to be swapped out with a 240v coil!

Also, if the motor IS multi-volt, the heaters/overloads will need to be swapped out since your FLC will approx. double because of the supply voltage being halved!

Theres no control transformer! Controls operate on 480v....

Unfortunately, thats a 480v only motor. Either get a transformer(expensive unless a good deal can be found) or replace the motor with either a 240v 3 phase motor or ditch the phase converter and buy a single phase motor and youll be set!

Can anyone recommend what motor I should get? I want to go 110 or 220 single phase and ditch the phase converter hassle.

we use Marathon motors alot. Harbor frieght sells motors also. If you can find a "184 frame" it should drop right in. You may have to fab a motor mount. It also appears that it is a two speed motor, 1750 rpm / 850 rpm - that may or may not be important to you. Measure the shaft and get the same horse power. I would go 220v if possible.

We use Baldor or Leeson motors a lot, I would contact your local motor/pump repair shop and see if they have any used motors. It would make your set up much simpler to eliminate the phase converter and go with the single phase motor, I would recommend 220 also, the higher voltage will reduce the current draw. You will also need to re-do the control circuit.
