The third hand design is a classic beginning welding project and never loses its usefulness. I've been wanting to put a threaded coupler or a couple of nuts on the end so I could screw on different tips, but never got around to it. I've made a few for friends as well.

Adding a cross bar about 1/3 from the tip allows you to lay small sand bags or other weights to it for additional pressure as needed. I made mine out of rebar.

I made mine from 3/8" rod stock. I use giant washers around the neck for weight. I like the sliding/locking weight idea. For the tip of mine, I turned a point on it on the lathe. Comes in handy for the micro scale tig stuff. Works just the same for bigger stuff too. I have thought about making interchangeable points, as a vee tip would be nice on small round stuff.
