Almost pulled the trigger on a used MATCO box today...

I really want (not need... but want) a bigger tool box. My 1967 vintage MAC and MBC top and rollcab have served me well since I bought them new. But we all have a lot more stuff than we used to need so I now have one additional roll cab plus two top boxes and I still need more room... and organization.

The MAC tool guy repo'd a MATCO box... model 7525... last week. I told him I was looking for one but wouldn't have the scratch until mid-summer. He called me and drove over to my shop last week to tease me. It's what I've been looking for... 56" wide/25" deep with a stainless top. It's an Iron Eagle special graphics deal... kinda odd grey color but who cares... I quit buying with my eyes long ago.

The MAC dealer was owed a bunch of $$$... he didn't sell this box new but made a deal to let the guy keep the tools he sold 'em so he could keep working and took this box instead. I think that was pretty fair of him...

So now I have a dilemma... I wanted to pay cash but don't have it right now. I can give him a downstroke on the box and pay it off in a few months. He wants $2800.00 for it... retailed in '04 for just under $8000.00 (special edition... ho hum). Cash talks I'm sure... but I can't beat his credit terms, either.

There will be others available I'm sure. The Cornwell guy has one coming back soon... but without the stainless top which I really like...$2500.00 in a similar size.

Gotta do some thinking here...

What do you think your "net" into the new box will be after selling your current set up of boxes? I try to think in those terms as its a good deciding factor of when to jump on something as an upgrade.

Same box with different graphics. Same year, too.

The graphics can be removed... doesn't seem to be a big deal. I could always paint it but I really could care less if it's pink... OK that's an exaggeration but you know what I mean. It's another tool for helping you goof off in the garage not a work of art.

I can probably get $150.00 for the nice Craftsman roll cab I have (where I store my pullers/timing light/taps and dies and other bulky stuff). Maybe another $90.00 for a Waterloo 26" wide chest that's had a repaint years ago but is in good shape. The small, old three drawer chest I store my drills and punches in is probably a $20.00 box.

I'd keep my old MAC and MBC boxes... I'm going to give them to my oldest son after I assume room temperature....

If its older stuff I would not think about like this^^.

If its what you want and you can get a good deal on it. Pull the trigger.

A lesson my father always taught me was basically the same thing you said, 'there will always be a deal somewhere, sometime.' You're in a good spot with the 'want' rather than 'need'. I agree with 35mastr, narrow it down to what you want, know what its worth, and when you see the right deal on it...go for it!

Got any pics of the vintage boxes?

No... but I could snap a few. I DO have more pictures of sidescreen TR's....

I learned a long time ago that few people NEED the stuff they buy... they do WANT it but rarely need it. No one needs a new car as the old one can usually be repaired. No one needs a $50,000 car because a $15,000 one will get you to the same places.

No one needs a wife that looks like Jessica Simpson when Rosie O'Donnel will do...OK I MADE THAT UP!

Oooh, sounds good. Maybe a TR thread is in order...

Yup, true for most of the time, that's for sure. IMO, that's what makes the US the best country out there...if you want to work hard and enjoy a $50,000+ car, you're free to do so. Although I'm beginning to wonder how much longer that freedom will be around...:lol_hitti

Oh that was wrong on so many levels :lol_hitti
I'm not sure I can pinpoint a more disgusting human being:puke:

i bought the same matco box, differnt color combo, a few years ag from my snap on dealer. if i remember correctly i gave him 1800 cash. it was a great deal, and he didnt want it on his so truck being a differnt brand. so i guess it was the right place at the right time. theres tons of people saling boxes right now that are losing jobs. i think if you where to ask around and check out your surrounding big cities craigslist, you could find a better deal.

I think I can negotiate a little... but the big deal is he'll finance this for 6 months or more. I'm broke right now but will be "rich" this summer....:wtf:

krooser, you're a good sport

I gotta say that seeing so many boxes for sale that there's plenty to choose from. If you're willing to drive some for the right box this summer, you'll have the cash available to negotiate even more. Between CL and ebay, there's a lot out there.

If it were me, I'd cut out the middle man by passing on the financing and waiting until the summer when I had the cash to drop on a deal I found myself. You'll spend less in the long run, and probably find a better box anyway.

BTW, if you want an easier way to search CL in multiple locations, try this site: http://www.searchtempest.com/

How about some pics of those old boxes? :)
