Hi all,
First time poster, been lurking for a while. Been really browsing this forum alot because the house I bought a year ago came with an unfinnished attached garage, so I have been looking at ways to insulate/finnish/organize it.

Anyways, I have a nice 12x20 shed that I recently resided and put new used windows in. I really want to expand my storage space so Im looking to build a lean to onto my shed.

My previous house I had a cedar privacy fence. Twice I had to replace rotten post that rotted out right by the concrete. So Im looking for alternatives to anchoring posts for my lean to. I don't want to redo this, I want it to last for a long time.

I had an idea of fabricating a plate with four holes and make a 4x4 box with 1/4 plate to place the 4x4 wood post in then screw it to the 1/4 plates. That way it doesnt touch the concrete and could be easily replaced if it does rot.

Would this be strong enough or am I just overthinking this?

Jim

You can buy them pre-made.
I just looked at some.
Anywhere from 22 bucks each to 220 bucks each, all on the same shelf at a small town true-value store.

I used a Simpson strong tie post base on my mailbox after the third time it was knocked over. Seems my mailbox had a target pasted on it and I got frustrated over having to repeatedly dig out the old cement base and then plant a new post. Now if it gets hit again (yes I drilled a couple holes in the bottom of the post at ground level) I simply unbolt and then straighten the above ground steel and plant the new post. I know that this is a little off subject but I am think you might find a solution at the Simpson web site.http://www.fastenersplus.com/fasteners/CBS-CBSQ-Column-Bases

Sure you can. Just remember that your lateral bracing above will have to be beefed up to replace the lateral bracing you'd have gotten from an embedded post.

Way over thinking it. Any of the above ideas will work fine. If attached securely your shed will provide all the lateral support the leanto needs the posts will just be for vertical support. If your worried put knee braces between posts and roof structure. The bottom tie's will just be to keep the posts from moving.

Had the same issue. Well until I cemented in a I-Beam 6' into the ground. Been hit twice since. Banged up the mailbox a bit but stopped the car and idiot driver. Too bad about their car.

For this thread, choose a good outdoor wood that resisted rot. It should last your lifetime
