Over time I have seen post such as this with members stating that an Amish family built their pole barn. I don't know or think that I ever seen Amish person before, but I have to ask? Is it because they are good, better than others who bid on job, etc? I wish they were down here in south,we need people who do what they say they will do.

Well, they are for sure honest.
Colon and Nottawa are centers of Amish country. Drive to Nottawa and go in the hardware store and ask. They'll have an answer.

I am located south of Coldwater, Mi....and I use a good Amish family that does all my stuff....reliable, honest and hard working....they're located s/e of Quincy.....they really prefer to travel only as far as to put in close to an 8-hour day, and get back on their buggy in 1 day....

rhunt13: sorry for the delay, haven't been on the computer for a while.

THE crew you want is Samuel Eicher.....he lives on the corner of Lester Rd. & Hamman Rd., on the n.e. corner.
I'd had them do a LOT of work for me over the years...really concerned about doing the best at their work, and easy to get along with!
Obviously they don't have phones, but you can usually catch 'em early in the mornings.

Picture 300 years ago raising a barn frame. Start by oil lamp and end with sunset. Whole village involved. That in my opinion is "Amish". No modern tools or electronics. No electricity. Plenty of you tube videos on them. They still drive horse and buggy to Walmart.
Gotta be careful though. I've seen things on TV selling Amish dressers or such with guys dressed up like Amish using air powered nail guns.

Plenty of Amish use tools today, especially air.

Your perception is not the only reality

I agree....it's to YOUR advantage to let 'em use your power saws, air guns, etc...after all, you're paying them by the hour, so why not
let 'em use your stuff? Either that or pay a LOT more due to them having to take longer if they had to cut/form everything by hand!

This thread brings a whole new meaning to the term, “rose colored glasses”

The Amish around me have horse buggies, but they all have cell phones and use power tools runoff of generators. Are use skid, loaders, and other equipment when necessary.

There is no definitive Amish anymore anyway.

The different groups decide what they can and cannot do

Perhaps. I do have a higher respect for workers that use hand tools as well as the ideals mentioned. I can scan and bang out a wood carving in a day but it has no skill in it. My point was don't just buy into a crew that says they are amish without knowing or getting references as some have above.

At the end of the day, they are businessmen in business to make money.

Provided their work is good, doing something way less efficient, is a benefit to who?

Trying to understand why which Amish do what they do how they do it will result in brain strain. I used to visit a pottery studio in the middle of an Amish corn field. There, I saw a four-mule-hitch pulling a harrow with rotary tines powered by a small diesel engine. Can't use a diesel powered tractor, but the diesel powered implement is kosher? Go figure!

naaa all good. regadless of ideals and beliefs its important to learn facts
for sure.

Around here some of the Amish put a morning kerosene lamp in the front window stating "yes, we are up!" but have a barn roof covered in solar panels.

Apparently they like the old and the new ways.

Most sects have always allowed the use of a flashlight. Seems reasonable. Not cheating on work like tractors do. Saving barns from burning down.

They've had telephones and fax machines (at least in the past) about as long as they were available, for buiness and communication.

They were just not allowed in the house. That's why there was the outhouse-looking "phone booth" near the road, that was shared among several nearby families.

Mostly gone since they now use cell phones.

They are not against using electricity for farming or business, they just are against be "tethered" to the outside world.

They might be smarter than we give them credit for! I don't think there are any on the West Coast, at least I have never seen them.

Would be line to have quality work done vs the slap it together as fast as possible we have here
