Back in June, I bought this lamp post from a friend of mine's daughter. My friend died in 1981 and it has been in the yard since the late 1950's. It, along with many others, were installed on Market St. in Parkersburg, WV.(across the river from me)around 1919. They were all removed and replaced with ugly overhead mercury vapor lights some time in the 50's. It is lost as to how my friend acquired the lamp post. Here it is before being removed with the picker.

That looks great. i have thought about installing a vintage lamp post in our front yard but running the wiring out there will be something out of my comfort zone.

It is 12 ft. tall and is a one piece casting and weights between 600-800lbs. Most of the casting is 1" thick with the bottom of the base being about 1 1/4" thick. That is an original GE glass globe.

That is really cool. My wife and I went to an estate sale last Friday, and there was a similar lampost there for $250, that came from the mental hospital in Bartonville, IL. We thought it would be cool to have it near our "river shed" but decided against it. I don't have the equipment to handle long heavy stuff like that. Odd thing was the globe that went with it was huge, but plastic. The original may have broken at one time.

Looks great!

I have a friend who has a lamp post from old Pasadena in CA. It's beautiful. The only problem is when he has to change the lamp. He has to rent a lift to get the the top.
I'd suggest finding an LED array for it.

Yes, already bought a warm white corncob LED.

We got the pad poured a couple of weeks ago. It is 14" thick with rebar cage. I already anticipated putting a lamp here someday, so when I was running the electric for the garage 10 years ago, I put conduit to the surface here. Anytime you're digging a ditch and you even think of a future project that involves conduit, put it in and cap it off. Conduit is cheap. Sure save me a lot of headache.

I painted it with Rustoleum satin black. I don't like gloss for things like this.

When I done the Sterling sign post last year, I used Rustoleum satin hunter green.

It is probably five or six castings welded together. Have you looked on the inside to see if there are any welds?

We debated that very question thinking it was more than one casting, the base and the barrel. One of my buddies is a contractor and using his scope, there were no signs of any weld joints.

The base for the top globe had a chunk of cast iron broken out and missing, so I filled it in with JB Weld SteelStik. Really worked well. The decorative plates in the bottom picture are attached below the top base and were added in the 1930's when the city converted the lamp post from a 5 light to a 1 light post. I'm sure the 5 light was a real headache for the city employee's tasked with changing the light bulbs.

I just realized I never posted the end result of my project. I think it turned out great.
