I plan to purchase a Milwaukee 4270-21 compact magnetic drill press and am looking for a good source of decent USA made annular cutters. Milwaukee says this machine uses 3/4" Weldon shank. So while searching , I ran into Hougen website (they also make magnetic drill presses) but according to one of their rep, they said their cutters are designed to work on their machines, not others. I've never hold an annular cutter in my hand before so I am not sure exactly what the difference would be. I looked at some pictures of 3/4" Weldon shank cutters and it appear they have two flats 90 degrees from each other. Looking at Hougen, I see their cutters also have two flats 90 degrees apart. To me, they look identical but since I am not yet experienced with this, is there something else that I am missing?

I like the fact that Hougen annular cutters are made in the USA which is why I am interested in them, but only if their cutters will work on this Milwaukee model. Is there any other USA brand cutters that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I have several sizes and brands of annular cutters -- they all have 3/4 weldon shanks with 2 flats 90 degrees apart. most annular cutters are like this. there are some that are different. they sell adapters to use them in morse taper drill presses, and R-8 collet adapters to use in a mill. Hougen, Jancy, Milwaukee, all good in my book !

Hello SR12:
You say you have not purchased the mag drill yet, so I ask. Why would you not get one with variable speed?? When I looked at the mil site its says 450 rpm... just my stupid opinion but would surely want variable speed reversible unless you just have a more fixed use for it?
Just as a item to talk about. We have had Bux drills in use for a long time and serve well for whats intended in our little world. But the VS reversible Milwaukee's we have is just the cats ***. The reversible for power tapping and reverse drilling. It ***** if you get the chuck for this unit and you want to use a small broach or spot cutter or standard drill bit with 450 rpm. Just saying.
The 3/4 shank is a industry standard with the tolerance that makes these all interchangeable with acceptable run out in there purpose. If it was Hougen you would order the rotabroach in the shank style. The other types are for tool less changout or different size cutters. To keep the explanation short. Surprised the salesman was short with you like that when in fact they make what you seek... Well actually not really...:dunno:
I keep an eye out for auctions and such as these are mighty pricey. If I can be of any help PM me lets talk I am not to good with connecting brain to keyboard....
good luck
Luke
