So after a few years in my home I've reached my endpoint. Living out of boxes in the basement for my tools has drove me insane. Large boxes for hand tools, small boxes and tupperwear for screws and nails, etc, etc. Its a basic 2 car garage.

First thing I need to do was rid myself of junk and an old commuting car. I picked up a set of cabinets at the local habitat for hummanity store. Pretty good deal. I picked up the whole set for $50.. which comes out to less than $5 per.

I mounted them on the wall using trial and error but figured it out well enough that they are level and secure to the wall.

I knew I wanted to mount some overhead storage over the cabinets. The idea would be to mount lights underneath. Using 2x4s and creating the framework, I mounted to the back wall using 5" ledger board lag screws. I installed an eybolt to the front with washers on bolt sides and tighted the nut on the inside. In the attic space I screwed 2 pieces of 2x6 across the rafters and and mounted the same eyebolt. The chain was installed on the bolt and lowered through a small slit in the drywall in the ceiling.

Using some leftover stain, I coated the unfinshed 2x4s with the stain.

Now on to painting the cabinets. Matching our front door and shutters I chose the valspar colonial green color in satin. I scuffed up the surfaces and laid on multiple coats of green. I intentionally left the chains long so I can hang the doors off them as I paint.

This weekend I decided I need to finish the overhead storage. I left the length at the standard 96" so I can mount a shop clock in that unused space. I used pegboard as the base material. Why, because it was cheaper frankly and what was going up there can easily be supported. I also knew that with the leftover I can make a long run of pegboard above a future built bench

Like I said earlier, the garage is a basic 2 car garage. What it does have though is an alcove space under the stairs that has been unutilized. It's served as a repository of clutter since we moved in.

I have played with the idea of mounting my compressor under there with sound deadeining material, but the family TV is on the other side of that wall and the noise was still too loud. I thought I would mount a fridge in there but the space is too small. So whats left? storage?

I mounted a leftover cabinet in there to see what it looks like. Wife doesnt want to make this a coat rack out of fear of another black widow incident that we've been having. Now I'm thinking I can store all my golf gear in there with a seat. Another idea was to mount a gun safe back there with a hidden front.

Now comes the bench build. I know I wanted a long work bench for that rear wall to serve as my primary bench. In front of this would be project island on sturdy locking wheels that I can roll up tight to the wall as a psedu return counter or elsewhere on the garage floor. Similiar in nature to this one...

I'll post an update soon.

Great space. I love the little storage nook.

Really like the cabinet color you choose too.

Count me in for this one.

I haven't made any significant progress on the garage. Had some snow here and have had an ongoing project going on inside that I HAVE to finish. Like everything else I tend to extend projects way beyond their needed timspans. The previous owners of our home destroyed our entryway stairs. Water marks and dog claw marks. Decided to sand and restain darker. Here are some before and progress shots. I am holding off on future garage progress till I can mark this one as complete.
