Thanks guys,
Scott.

The 30 series were good tough model series, I owned three of them back a few years, 1630, 1830, and 3130, engines have "wet sleeves" so the piston and liners could be replaced no problem, Ill keep my fingers crossed on the crank for ya.
The aftermarket Is supplying parts, for these now. That might save you a bit over the dealers prices.
At least you will have allot of space to tear her down. Hey does it ever rain in Adelaide It always seems dry in your pics.:D

Thanks for the updates, Chris

Ajustable - Great to hear positive things from a 30 series owner. Yeah the wet sleeves is a positive.

My dad's actually found a dealer in Australia who supplies an aftermarket kit including a brand new crank and sleeves so I'm pretty happay about that, for arough $1500 Aud.

I've also order a workshop manual on CD for about 1/5th of the price of one from JD.

Rainfall in Adelaide...not so much. But we get plenty where we are, but we did have a very dry winter this year. We're about 100mm (4") short of what we got last year which was over 650mm (26").

Not a lot happening on the shed build as life is getting in the way.

Last weekend was a long weekend so I managed to get all the tek screws in the shed, which was lucky because this week we had a day with nearly 100kph winds.

I also just took delivery of a couple of little rainwater tanks to go on the shed.

They're 22,500l (5000G) each. One will be used for straight rainwater for household/shed use, and the second will get rainwater overflow as well as water pumped in from our creeks to feed the stock troughs and water the garden and orchard.

It's really starting to look like an aussie farm shed now.

This weekend I plan on fitting the last 8 sheets on the front and fit up the corner flashings and barge and ridge capping.

I also need to measure up and make some gutter brackets for the rear wall and also some fixing brackets for the front flashing that covers the roller door track and design some gutter brackets for the front. The gutter will pretty much sit on the roller door track brackets so the straps will merely hold it up there.

Thanks,
Scott

Right on! I like how your father designed the shed!! It must feel like the other shed when you are inside it, that would be nice and familiar.

Do you have any pics of the trailer you guys are living out of? I like how you fixed up that little shed to have a livingroom outside your trailer...

Do you plan to build a house after your shed is built?

Personally I enjoy the "outback" lifestyle you guys live, ever since I watched the Madmax films I have wanted to visit, buy a V8 car with no mufflers and tour around!

I don't really have many pics of the trailer as it's a bit of an eyesore.

A house is definitely one of the next projects. I may even build it myself. Not entirely sure yet but we'll see.

A little progress from yesterday. Finished all the sheets of iron and also got all the flashings, barge capping and ridge capping on. It's actually looking almost like a finished shed now.

I just need to fit the gutters and downpipes and weld up some doors and get them fitted.

Just a little update. I scored 7 high bay lights for a low low price of $70 for the lot. Pretty stoked.

They're all rated at 400w and have 400w globes. All tested good.

Got them home so I had to test one... (excuse the grainy phone pics)

Now that's a light! I notice Paramount Browns have some second handers for sale recently. They're asking $35 each, looks like they're worth every cent of that :)

Hey All - It's been quite a long time since I got on here to post. I've been really busy with many many projects to say the least and thankfully this has included a little bit of shed work.

I've being doing a few car things recently, got my 808 back on the road for a mates wedding a couple of weeks back, I've gotten back into brewing beer and I've been growing my own hops which I've been harvesting for the last month. I've started stripping my tractor for engine removal and many many other projects.

I've just recently finished all the wiring for lights and powerpoints. all downpipes are in and my tanks are ready and waitign for winter.

Thats pretty much my update. My next plans are to build the doors as well as build a cattle crush for your cattle yards. I got myself a new MIG, Cigweld 250AMP Weldskill, which I can't wait to fire up.

My shed is pretty much full at the moment. We've got 3 loads of hay in there for this years lot of steers. My dad crops hay so we got some from him in the off season so we've got enough in case we have another bad year.

Great idea growing your own hops, what variety? Would grow them myself but it is a bit warm here.

Glad to hear you're getting into homebrewing :) Check out http://www.brewadelaide.com/forum/ for an excellent local forum, and http://www.sabrew.com for a local homebrew club (Disclosure: I'm on the committee of SABC)

I've got Chinook and Cascade growing here :)

(and can I plug my homebrewing blog? www.vortex.id.au :))

Thanks Vortex, I've been on AHB a fair bit and have signed up for BrewAdelaide but haven't posted anything as yet. Still pretty amatuer

I've got 5 varieties in. Cascade, Chinook, Victoria, Goldings and Cluster. The Cascade and Chinook have been the best so far with 1.4kgs picked between them with still a little bit to go. I think our climate up in the hills is perfect with nice long days and nowhere near as hot as down towards the city.

I'll expand my garden this year and try and get a bigger yield.

Is that rockwork building on your property? The wood my be history but rocks and concrete don't rot or feed termites. I'll bet you can save the old gal with a bit of TLC.

Sure is Bib. We're currently in the process of designing a new house and hope to use a fair bit of the old stone there. The building dates back to mid-to-late 1800's but as you can probably see it's a little dangerous as it is and a bit too far gone to save unfortunately.

5 varieties code4pay. It grows likes weeds, well because it is. I've looked after them pretty well giving them plenty of water.

The freezer is pretty well stocked now and I used some freshly picked Chinook in a brew on Saturday

Nice shed Scott, I only discovered this thread today.

I love the Blitz pics too, my dad used a Chevy Blitz for snigging logs out of the bush and loading the truck.
He got it just after the war (it had been a 25-pound gun carrier in Egypt) and kept it fully registered (as a "mobile winch" - not permitted to carry any load) to drive it from job to job.
That thing would go just about anywhere.

Nice looking area you're in too.

Thanks Mark. I loves the Bitz as well. One day it'll be mine :)

My dad always tells me about the local fire truck being a blitz and his first job was down the South East of SA, working in the pine forests, where there were a lot of them getting around pulling logs like you mentioned. What a sight that would have been.

Thanks again for your comments.

I found this great picture taken of our property a few years ago for the Heysen Trail website. I feel a bit terrible that the shed is now destroying the beautiful outlook.

A little bit of shed work on the weekend and also started my first shed project.

I've started maknig the doors finally. Things went from a pile of steel to doors pretty quickly. Only got these pics so far though.

Then I started building a cattle crush, a job I'd been putting off for a while, my first proper project in the shed. Got to use my new welder as well

I bought a head bail and a sliding gate and custom built all the bits inbetween including gates. I hate welding galv

And I also tested out my new brew vessel. A decommissioned keg and a Rambo 55MJ wok burner. Brewed a custom recipe IPA using Cascade and Equinox hops (190gms in total) Smells amazing.

So.. if you brew enough you could feed some cattle your spent grain... would make for tasty eating :)

Unsure what Smiling Samoyed at Myponga do with all their spent grain, but might be worth a call if you have cattle.

That's the best retirement that keg could dream of :) I'd bet it never had anything so tasty in it when it was in commission for West End!

A small update. Finished building my doors so just waiting for my dad to get some time to bring them up to my place on his truck.

Door progress pics:

I started building the door guides yesterday. Nothing fancy, they're fairly simple.

I also finally finished and installed our cattle crush. It went in pretty well without a hitch and just need the front end raised slightly higher than I'd set the footings. An easy adjustment. Haven't tested it yet but should be able to soon when we AI our two heifers. I saved about $2500 building this myself rather than buying a new one, and I also used heavier steel than the manufacturers do.

Excuse the blurry pic

I also picked up a couple of Triton tools last week. I got a table saw and router table along with a box jointer jig. Looking forward to putting these to use building some storage for the shed.

What a great shed, and block of land. Congrats. Will follow your progress with interest. The part where you got the wrench in your pocket caught on the electric fence almost had a mouthful of hot coffee come out of my nose.

cheers,

A small update but a big step. I finally got my doors painted and clad over the weekend. You wouldn't think it's winter at the moment but I had to wear suncream. We've had an amzaing few weekends which means quite a few jobs have been completed, but only a few are shed related.

Just waiting for my neighbour to get back from a holiday so we can level out the workshop area and then concrete

Another big update. I got myself a cool new job so managed to get 2 weeks of holidays off between resigning and starting my new job. This meant A LOT of jobs have been completed over the last two weeks, not all shed related though :(

I started work on my PA door. This is going to be an ongoing task for a few weeks as I make it up as I go along with no real plans. The reason is I've only got 65mm to work with as the PA is on the door which slides between the shed wall and the adjacent door so not a lot of room to work with for hinges and door handle/locking mechanism. I'm going to try an RFID with magnetic lock and see how that goes.

I5J3uo.jpg

hn1DQZ.jpg

But, the biggest job that happened only yesterday, was the arrival of 15 cubes of concrete for the shed floor (well, half of it). This has been a long time coming but it's finally done and I haven't stopped smiling since. It looks fantastic and I cannot wait to start setting everything.

Just doing my research as I really want to paint it but not sure as yet. I'd like to try a Rust Bullet or 2pack epoxy. I had a chat with Parchem and they priced up the 'Rolls Royce' package at just under $2K trade price. Not keen to spend that much cash so might settle for a clear sealer.

Enjoy the pics :)

I have a similar PA door built into my sliding door but I swung my door out and hinged it off the frame of the shed. So there is no sliding door frame around the PA door, just a door sized gap in the sliding door, it works well.

Great build thread. Would love to have the space, and money for something that size.
What portion of the floor is concreted? Why no chairs to hold the steel up in the middle? Was the ground higher there?
My shed is progressing much too slowly as work keeps getting in the way.

Cheers,

Ken

Not much excitement from me unfortunately. Been working on stripping and rebuilding my John Deere, setting up a new brew vessel and building my benches.

Photos will appear up here soon.

How are you hops looking? Should be shooting about now! I need to get a trellis up for mine this weekend..

My hops are going ok so far, nowhere near as good as last year as I was a little late watering them. They're throwing laterals now so looking good.

I dug out and gave away the Goldings and cut up some chinook and cascade as well so just got Cascade, chinook and victoria this year.

Really looking forward to doing a harvest brew again.

We didn't put the chairs it until the end so we could back the truck right into the shed. Once he pulled out further we threw the chairs in under. Makes it so we don't need a pump.
