So, I've decided to build another garage in addition to my barn. I didn't think I would be, but now I am. SO, I'm looking for the community to help me find good "kit" companies out there. I will be building this myself, and this isn't the first time. However, I can't seem to find a good kit site. As usual, most don't show pricing unless you enter all of your contact info which I'm not going to do.
My house was built in 26, and there's a barn not far from the house. So, I have a good idea of what I want, I hope you guys can steer me to some good sites.
Wants:
Garage needs to be minimum 2 stall
It needs to have a Gambrel roof
Any siding is fine; Wood is fine, or I will Vinyl it to match the house
A loft would be good, but not necessary.
Garage doors can be standard or oversized, it doesn't matter. The barn already has an oversized garage underneath that can fit heavy machinery
I want the garage to simulate the looks of a barn so it looks the part with the "farm" property.
Otherwise, I'm pretty open. Size, shape, etc are of no consequence. I have a minimum acre to put this thing on, so no size restrictions of any kind. Like anyone else, I'd love the cheapest price, but I will take what I can get.

In my area, it's apparently impossible to find a quality builder. I called 5 people yesterday to build a custom garage; no one does that apparently. I was going to attach a garage to the house, and none of them wanted to do that, even though it would be easy. That side of the house has nothing that would need to be demoed, and heck, even the back door wouldn't need to be removed. It would just become the inside garage door.
1 guy said, "go to Menards or Home Depot and pick out a kit. Then I'll build it." Umm, if I wanted to do that, I'd just build it myself. Which, it looks like I'm going to have to do after my phone calls.
One guy lives in the housing development directly across the street from me. His house faces mine. He said, "I'm busy for the next two weeks with work, but after that I'll stop over. He lives less than 100 feet from me. Immediately off the list!
Third builder is coming at 1pm today to talk shop. They "used" to build garages onto houses, but he said it's cost prohibitive. When I asked what that was, he said, "2-3 times what a standalone would cost." So I said, give me a number. That's when he said, "We just don't do that anymore."
So, apparently, people in my area don't like to work hard. It's been very frustrating so far, so I'm hoping the GJ community is a little more personable.

Toss me your thoughts!

Seriously though, what's with wanting a "kit"?

Just sketch up what you want and get a local lumber yard (Or 2) to price out the materials.

Do your own takeoff to check their material list and "Bobs Yer Uncle"!

To me, there's no such thing as a kit. The quality of the lumber you get and the pickiness and skill of your carpenter will determine how much of a quality and cost savings a build you get.

Hand pick your lumber and your carpenter.

A good carpenter will waste little, but will reject unsuitable materials, which you return.

I'm going to be my own carpenter. I decided to choose a kit just to avoid any headaches. At the same time I'm putting up a garage I'm also moving the house to a new foundation, and pouring a long driveway, all being done by yours truly. So, with the garage, I'm willing to spend a little more to have it show up on a truck rather than have to figure it all out on my own.

Following. I am in similar boat as soon going to be buying a home and plan on building a garage and not sure which way i should go.

I'm currently deciding between a kit and getting plans online and pricing those. I'm sure the planned version will be cheaper, but the kit will be easier to put together.

I'm for the plan it out and get quotes from local yards idea, or you might be able to get a couple contractors out to give you estimates on what you want. The decent ones will give you a breakdown list on work and materials.

Just left work about an hour ago to meet with the first contractor that would actually show up. Well, they never did.

It's getting harder and harder to spend money.

bczygan is correct imo and someone else said it as well; if you end up going non-kit, a good lumberyard will sit with you and go through every stage of what you are trying to build. Have drawn up what you are looking to do, have an idea of what things cost and plan to sit there for about an hour. They may know various local codes of 'all headers must be a min of 2x10' or 'the county requires _______ 48" from a corner of an exterior wall'. When a customer is dropping thousands of dollars on a project and much of that budget is going to them, they should steer you in the right direction. The more they are involved from the beginning (you will likely get a rep that will be your product guy) the less headaches they and you will have near the end.

Finally, if you don't like the result and go another way, the quote gives you a good shot in time of the material cost.

Have you looked at barnplans.com? I have not used them, but they may have a design you would be interested in.

I had a hard time finding a decent contractor on a rural section of south central michigan. There is a large local lumber yard, i went up to the counter and asked for names of contractors that keep them, (the lumber yard,) busy. The counter guy was great and gave me three names of guys he recommended highly - and whom he would let work on his house.

Of those three, 2 came out for estimates (building my 60' x 40' x 16' pole barn) and the 3rd never called back.

the guy doing my build is awesome - very communicative & responsive. Phase two is starting next week (interior finishing). He is very busy but always returns calls and shows up when needed.

Long story short, ask the local lumber yard for resources!
