Hi guys, what a great site!
Having just retired, I'll be adding a shop to the back of our house to store some woodworking equipment as well as a hoist. I'm certain that this site will prove to be a valuable asset throughout that process. Yesterday I spent about three hours just totally absorbed in the different threads.
A couple of years ago we added a 12 x33 garage to side of our existing two stall, and it has turned into our rec room, so the new addition will have to be more functional.
Here is a plan for the new addition:
http://www.customfurniture.net/ati2de/page11.html
As you will see, access will be by driving through the garage pictured below. It's kind of different (weird might be a better term) but there is no other way to access it.

Just a suggestion...

It looks like there is another way to access it if you eliminate that bedroom!

Plus it'll give you more garage space!

 Great looking rec-room/garage! I love the backbar display area over the bar stools. Nice lighted display cabinets for your diecast cars, too!

Thanks for all the kind comments, guys.

OHEKK; Great idea about accessing it through the bedroom, however I'm pretty sure the wife  might have some not so kind comments.

Signed the contract for the new addition this AM. The contractor should be getting started in about 2 weeks (I need to remove some trees and move a shed first). He estimates 10-12 weeks to complete. I'll try and document the progress.
I have most of the woodworking tools that I am keeping stored in one of the stalls of the original garage (big mess) and the rest including the 31 Model A is in storage. The Miata will go in front of the Bucket for now and the pickup is relegated to the outdoors. I'm getting a little closterphobic in here! :eyecrazy:

Just curious, but what are you guys in different parts of the country paying per sq ft for a garage addition? This bid was ~$95.00. The last one was $106.00

Rod

PS
wythors, If I did it correctly a couple of the Bucket photos should show up with the post.

Just an update.
We have started the addition, excavation is done, footings poured and the stem walls will be poured today.
I'll try and keep a running progress report going, but in the meantime I've got a log of events here: http://www.customfurniture.net/new

The 31 coupe is the one I still have, I sold the 29 a couple of years ago. The Wheels/ tires on the 31 are off the 29 (I just switched them to see what the WW's would look like on the coupe. the 29 had 21" wheels while the 31 had 19" That explains why the coupe is sitting so high. This spring I will get a set of 19" WW's for it.

We finally got some sunshine, so the floor has been poured, lumber delivered and framing will start in the morning.
The two 'pipes" embeded in the floor are for a dust collector and a floor 220 outlet.
The "dust pipe" is a 4" that goes outside the building and will connect up to a 4 bag collector. I don't intend to build a lot of furniture (retired now), so I'll just roll up a tool, plug it in (both power and the dust system) then switch to what ever tool I need next. The small (5') OH door gets removed and replaced with a 10' x 7' the man door gets moved to the new addition (you can see the opening in the stem wall.
The 2nd photo shows the opening for the french doors, there will be two 3-0 / 5-0 windows on either side of the french doors and one 4-0 / 4-0 window in the remaining two walls. The hoist (single post from "American Custom Lifts") will be centered off the 10' OH door.

Walls are up!!

Thanks guy's for the cost per sq ft comparisons.

Today a five man crew showed up! they put up the three walls and were out of here by 2:30 in the afternoon.

If I get the order right, the 1st Photo shows the south wall with the openings for the French doors and flanking windows.

The 2nd shows the view from inside the addition thru the doors/windows (I'm going to like this.).

The 3rd shows the point where the new addition attaches to the old garage. Both of these doors will be replaced with a 10' OH door (dust control). You can see the existing OH access door in the distance. I will be driving thru that garage to get to the hoist in the new addition.

The 4th photo is a view from the street side or entrance.

This is getting pretty exciting now that I can see it coming together :rocker: . Thanks for looking.

Getting taller

Scissor trusses have arrived and are installed. Next week are the shakes, Electrician, and insulation. Sheetrock should go on the week following, then I can start painting. the ACL single post lift is supposed to be shipped somewhere around the week of the 10th.

Out here in Oregon the firring strips are commonly used in place of Plywood for the sub roofing when installing shakes. My understanding is that the roof breathes better. Probably has something to do with all that moisture we get.
As for the speed of the construction, yes they have picked up the pace. Up until this week it had been about 3 hours a day, then we had a little talk. :tantrum2:

Nice shop and cars. I like the '31. Here is a picture of mine. My Grandfather bought this new off of the showroom floor in '31 Then my Dad got it and now I have it. They are a lot of fun to drive. This is the same car that is in my avatar.

86swb,
That's a great 31! It's also pretty amazing that you're the third generation owner, have you got a 4th generation to assume the ownership? That would really be something!

As for the new addition? It's in the home stretch. Got the sheet-rock hung & taped today (it should be complete and I'll be painting this weekend). The siding is supposed to go up this week as well. I ordered the "Race Decking" this morning (1000sq ft @ 2.69 ea) That's enough for the addition plus I'm doing the original 2 stall. (I also had 150' left over from the garage in the photos on the front of this thread. I ordered direct from RaceDeck. When I had the salesperson on the phone, I asked about the difference between RD and Motofloor (Costco). She said the back of it was different, i.e. not as strong (Who knows?). Anyway she asked what they were getting for it, I quoted her $2.50 per tile; that's when she lowered the price of the RD from 2.99 to 2.69 (dealer price she said).

In the photos below, the one with the holes in the wall are where doors go for access to storage. The two outside (irregular shapes) will be for stereo speakers (speaker cloth over the front.

Bet that ceiling was a pain to hang. I had three daughters and no sons so the Modes A goes to one of my son-in-laws. But it does have to stay in the family. But after I am gone, I really do not heve much control over that but I know which son-in-law is getting it and I know he will pass it down to his son (my grandson) or I just might pass it down to my grandson. Not really sure. But I do know I will not sell it.

Just about ready to move in. I'm doing the finish work and have the window and door trim to do yet as well as paint the outside. The hoist won't be here until early May. Yes, this will be a working garage (both the cars and woodworking).

WOW :shocking: As I was looking at the photos I started to look at the sheet rock work and realized that the height of your garage is somewhere around 16 plus feet high at the peak. Am I right?? Looking at the construction pictures from the outside you can't really see that until you look at it from the inside. Is the only access to the larger garage through the old one? I was just wondering. Any way it's a great space and you've done it up right. :rocker:

Actually the peak is closer to 18'; and yes the only access is through the original garage. I'm completely landlocked by other houses so this was my only option. From the street side you cannot tell that this addition is there.
Next up is to redo the "drive-thru" garage in the same colors (wainscoating and raceing stripe), and then the original two stall that came with the house (gives me something to do with this new found retirement).

Thanks for the compliment

Rod

PS
Any ideas on the door color? I'm thinking red, but the wife says leave it white.
