another vent thru a wall question --

Hi Guys


Sorry for rehashing this sort of question again. I have a solaronics 40 foot natural gas radiant tube heater that I'm installing in my garage. I've had the gas plumbed in and the guy who's doing the final hook up isn't around, nor is anyone I know that's an authority.

According to the manual, I need 2 inches of clearance from combustible materials around the vent hole, 0 inches from non-combustible materials. No problem. Here's the question. The wall is ICF design, 6 inches thick. What I'm wondering is, can I cut a hole thru the cement portion of the wall that's 4 inches in diameter and enlarge the combustible materials on either side of the hole to the 8 inches that is required by code? The thing is, I can rent a 4 inch diameter core saw, but to make an 8 inch hole thru the concrete in the wall it's going to have to be overlapping holes which makes the job much bigger.

The manual only shows combustible and non-combustible installations.

Anybody have any experience or suggestions?

Is this a solid concrete wall or a block wall
if its block buy a cement blade for your angle grinder cut out half a block you can always cement in around your home made circular tube you made from some galvanized steel :)
then put your exhaust through a thimble and your done

ya, this is a solid poured concrete wall, that's 6 inches thick. On either side of the concrete is 2 inch thick stryofoam, drywall(inside) hardy board (outside). So making the hole is going to have to be a core saw/drill. As I said earlier, a 4 inch diameter core bit is available. I'm hoping that'll be ok, with removing the styro and cladding an additional 2 inches around the 4 inch hole..

Yes, you can cut the combustibles back to create your clearances. You will loose some energy, but really, how much are we talking here. Are you getting this inspected? If so a conversation with the AHJ (Authority having Jurisdiction) would be helpful. Tell them what you want to do and get agreement. He is going to refer to the installation manual for the appliance. I wouldn't know why you couldn't as long as you are 2" each side of the hole. Are there any combustibles on the outside of the wall or just the inside? And will you need to frame something out for the combustible material or is the polystyrene (?) the only thing showing? If it would make for a neater job, you might want to see if there is a concrete coring company in your area. They could knock out an 8" hole in no time
