I've got an old Hammer, I've had it for years, I think it came from my Grandfather (born in the 1870's) it is oddly shaped, the handle looks home made as well. I cleaned it up a little today.

I make out the words "W.P. Allison Warranted"

I Goggled Allison and only came up with this link, Apparently he was from Connecticut and made tools......

Tools Made: Edge Tools. Hammers, axes and chisels

Working Dates: C1827-75. Born 1806, Died 1875.

Here are some photos, anyone with any more information on this company?? Or this hammer?? What it was used for, etc. The handle is too short for productive carpentry plus there is no nail pull claw, just a flat curved surface.
Cobbler?
Some long extinct trade?

Dave, I like it. Can just feel with your eyes & mind you gpa working square nails in, tapping wooden pins in logs building a home ect. I savor the ideas and tools to complete the task back then. Do you have anymore of his tools? I would be honored to gander at them or better yet to hold them.

I have to agree with it being a Cobblers hammer. I couldn't guess as to the intended purpose as there has been an absence of Cobblers hereabouts for a couple decades. I do however have a few pieces that came from a shoe repair place and one if memory serves me correctly is very similar to yours.

I just found one of those at an estate sale myself just last week. Its a bit newer then yours but it has the exact same shape with the words, "FORGED" under the claw.

Its definitely a cobblers hammer.
