I have a 98# Hay Buden I’m fixin’ to sell.. It appears that there is a 3/8-1/2” cap on the top of the anvil. The edge of one side looks like it was washed out with poor welding. Perhaps it was a poor repair from a user trying to build up the most commonly used edge. We’re they originally forged with that cap or is it a poor repair? I’ve had this for a few years and haven’t gotten into the work I had intended. It is difficult to work with fire in these parts.

That cap is a repair. I don't know of any that came from the foundry with the cap. I wouldn't call it a poor repair, it is probably from use, the edge gets work hardened and breaks off. Also, a little water will get between the surfaces and with it brings rust that will further the de-lamination.
