My neighbor did this. Raised and lowered with a pretty good winch. He's had no problems with it. His wife and can do it as well if need be. He just tied the winch to two parallel boards and then tied those boards to three joists.

"anybody hung a shell from the roof"

What do you mean by shell? Are you talking about a pickup truck topper? If so, how big and how heavy? Is it just a basic one, not a big camper or anything?

I have a car body hanging from the rafters in my garage. It is about 5 feet off the floor so I store lots of 'stuff' under it. It just has two nylon web straps through the window openings and is held by a chain fall. I can easily get it down at any time.... (if I move the 'stuff' that is under it.

We have a hardtop on the Jeep that we take off every spring. Here's how i made some modifications in our garage to safely remove the hardtop without damaging the garage trusses.

The previous owner of our home had a beam made of multiple 2x6's set-up above the truss lower chords in the attached garage. It is physically attached to a post that goes to the floor, where the beam and wall intersect. The free end of the beam is a concern to me, since any weight bears against the lower truss chords. To remedy this we bought a Tiger Brand Super S Series 8 ft. 4 in. Jack Post to install on the free end of the beam. This will only be installed temporarily when the hoist is being used, and then removed.

I installed a small electric winch on the beam and built a rolling cart which we will set the Jeep hard top on.

Here's the beam with the new bracketry and hoist, before we rennovated the garage:

And the free end of the beam, with the support column bracket attached:

After garage rennovations, with temporary column.

Back when I was living on my parent's farm and would remove the shell from my shortbed Chevy, I would slide a 2x4 under the front and one under the rear about a foot from each extreme. These 2x4's had eyebolts in the ends in which I would hoist a corner at a time up until it just cleared the bedsides and drive my truck out from under it. It would then suspend there until I was ready to reinstall as it was out in one of the outbuildings.

Fast forward to my Jeep top at my last home about five years ago, I purchased one of those storage shelf type systems that raised and lowered from the ceiling with a hand crank. I would back my Jeep under the shelf, lower it down, run a strap around the shelf and through the top between the glass gate and the fiberglass firmly attaching the shell to the shelf and raise it to the ceiling. Worked out pretty slick and was a one person job. I think I will do something very similar to store my Jeep fiberglass top in my new house come spring.
