Anybody using barn wood for wall paneling?

I'm getting ready to build a 28x36 and since I'm into old cars and gas pumps, I thought it would be neat to maybe finish out one of my side walls with reclaimed barn siding. I know I have seen one garage on here that has done this, but I'm not sure whose it is. I'm curious to how much it can be done for, and if anybody has any pictures, that would be great.

My parents used to have barn siding in their family room. When they took it down I took it think ing I would use it somewhere. I stacked it with some boards (14" wide)out of small barn I had removed. It all sat in the corner of my garage till I was looking for something and noticed some silverfish and another insect in the wood. It all went into the wood burner and I put some pesticide down in the garage.

My advice, make sure it's not inhabited when you bring it into your home.

One member used old redwood or cedar fence boards that he pressure washed and trimmed the dog-ears off to use as interior paneling.

Don't remember who

I like the look of barn boards ,but they are getting harder to find and pricey! Have you though about using roughsawn boards from a sawmill? Around here white pine runs about .53 board ft. Poplar is about .73 board ft. BTW, what ever you use run it through the kiln at the saw mill that will eliminate any insects. JMO.

Didn't think of that. May be worth checking into. One thought that crossed my mind was how hard would it be to keep clean in a garage environment. I will be doing body work in my garage, so there will be a fair amount of dust. So I'm wondering if this will be a good idea or not. I definitely like the wood look to give one of the walls character, but I don't want it to get nasty with dust either. This won't be a "eat-off-the-floor" kind of garage, but it will be a working garage.

It was fence boards. I can see the pictures in my mind where he had them up against the house powerwashing them.

In doing a search, I found this one, but it's not the one I was thinking of. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116615&highlight=fence+boards

It may have been this member 1965GP but I'm not thinking it is. The garage I am thinking of may have had taller ceilings http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144727

I installed 100 year old, oak barn siding in my billiard room about 35 years ago. It has held up well and I use the shop vac to dust it. It is very hard wood and I pre-drilled the nail holes to prevent splitting the wood and used cut nails to attach it to the furring strips.

The wood for the walls of my pole barn came from my neighbor's 80 year old tobacco barn. It really warms the place up and smells great. I am a little paranoid about welding sparks though. I don't go in for the night until about and hour after I finish welding or grinding.

If animals were in the building I suggest getting wood that was up high. If not on a hot day that good old urine smell will come back. I know, my old barn on the cattle side has this problem. No critters in there for 30+ years that I know of.

I wouldn't do it. I have dealt with reclaim wood for the last 4 years. It's not that nice. Unless you are going to go through the trouble of denailing it with a metal detector and remilling it.

People are stupid about barn board. They treat it like it isn't just old wood. When/if you buy it make sure you pay for what it is. Junk.
Hopefully you can get it for free.

My dad did the entire interior of his shop with old bleacher boards. The high school he worked for got a donation for all new bleachers, and they were going to scrap the old ones!
Prestained, finished nicely enough for a shop...just has the bolt holes to deal with. Cleans easily, and really looks nice.
He is now finishing a 100 year old barn to be his wood shop. I think he plans on using the bleacher boards for the floor and barn boards for the walls.

Nice room! I was wanting to have a "clean" room like that, but I won't have the space in this garage to do that. Maybe in the next one. I would love to have a room like yours.

Thanks for the links to the other garages guys. There is some nice looking ones out there. That's the good and bad side to this website....You get too many good ideas and can't leave well enough alone. But that's half the fun. Making it your own.
