I was wondering if any of you is using a K&N filter for your compressor or have thought about it? Any downside? I am thinking that it would make it easier for future maintenance.

I think I will go for it. I just don't want to keep buying filters when they need replacing when I can just clean it. Going green... must re-use.. ;)

I'm not using a K&N, but I am using an automotive filter.

K&N filters require a lot of maintenance. The oil soak gauze is an absolute dirt magnet. I would guess you would have to clean it and re-oil it at least once a month if not more.

**** K&N there is plenty of better dry flow reusable air filters out there now, either they are vacuum out or wash on the out side and rinse from the inside out...

Try looking up dry flow air filters to fit you're application

Once a month, what the hell you doing in there?

I run K&N on everything, for many years, Silverado, Harley, compressor, lawn mower, never ever had a problem. The problem with K&N is people using too much oil on the filter element.Thats gonna cause the MAF problems, and **** collecting on it.

While I am remaining neutral on this issue I must ask.

If the **** isn't collecting on the filter is it not passing through it?

Some of the posters here appear to be deficient in air filter technology - both theory and application!

I've used and been around oiled filters (primarily K&N) on on/off road vehicles and stationary equipment for over a score of years IIRC.

The only problem I've run across w/K&N and other similar 'oiled' filters is
fouling of some Dodge Cummins TD truck temp sensors.... even 'as oiled' straight from the factory packaging.
Really truly 'over oiled' can affect other things that don't like oil - esp MAFs.

While I've reviewed numerous comparisons (text and R/L) the jury's still out on air compressor
clean but possibly oily v. dirty reed valves.... though I personally prefer clean but possibly oily.

How much some of you figure this 5 hp pump is going to require over a year. I put a used tractor air filter element on one 15 yrs ago, haven't cleaned it yet.

Some making comparisons to a 300 cubic inch truck motor running in Iraq I think. Look at the filter on a 10 hp gas engine designed to run on a filthy lawn mower. That is the demand. I do like the idea with old truck intake from outdoor, bet it never needs maint. I was scrapping a car this last week and was eying some of the duct for a similar venture, outside air making it a bit quieter. I like the car filter. real good, sould even be hosed thru the wall.

What softail is saying is that some of the oil gets on a MAF sensor and the sensor does not like that. This has nothing to do with an air compressor. Given some of the filters that come with compressors, a K & N would be dandy. But a flippin' K & N lawn mower filter is 15 bucks. I'll go with a sponge filter before paying that. I'm not talking riding mower either.
