I was at the local welding supply to get my C25 tank swapped out, and the guy asked me if I had ever used a Pferd brand cut off wheel. I told him I never heard of them, and he gave me a sample. Its a 4.5" x .040" thick disc. They are made in Germany.
I have tried lot of cutting discs, and have always liked the Nortons, however, the Nortons dont last long at all. Sait's last linger, but dont cut nearly as well/fast. I think the sait has more reinforing materal, and less grit, so it last longer, and the Norton has more cutting grit, and less reinforcement, and the cutting material wears quickly.
So I have been using the Pferd disc for at least 3-4 times longer than a Norton would last, and there is still plenty left. It cuts just as fast, but I think more accurately (as the disc is a more consistant thickness throuout the entire surface area). Now mind you, I am mainly cutting 18 guage mild steel on car bodies, but that 18 guage steel is a constant in my test.
I also tried a Hilti cutting wheel yesterday, which was somewhere between the Norton and Pferd in longevity, and about as good as far as cutting speed as the norton and Pferd.
For price reference, I pay $1.35 for the Nortons at Home Depot, The Hilti was around $3.00 at a (rarely found) Hilti stocking home depot, $1.75 for Sait's at the local industrial supply, and the local welding supply (roberts oxygen) will sell me the Pferd's at $2.00 each.
I think the price difference in the Pferds is definately justified over the Nortons based on how long they last.
Anyone tried the Metabo cut off wheels?
