I was at the local welding supply to get my C25 tank swapped out, and the guy asked me if I had ever used a Pferd brand cut off wheel. I told him I never heard of them, and he gave me a sample. Its a 4.5" x .040" thick disc. They are made in Germany.

I have tried lot of cutting discs, and have always liked the Nortons, however, the Nortons dont last long at all. Sait's last linger, but dont cut nearly as well/fast. I think the sait has more reinforing materal, and less grit, so it last longer, and the Norton has more cutting grit, and less reinforcement, and the cutting material wears quickly.

So I have been using the Pferd disc for at least 3-4 times longer than a Norton would last, and there is still plenty left. It cuts just as fast, but I think more accurately (as the disc is a more consistant thickness throuout the entire surface area). Now mind you, I am mainly cutting 18 guage mild steel on car bodies, but that 18 guage steel is a constant in my test.

I also tried a Hilti cutting wheel yesterday, which was somewhere between the Norton and Pferd in longevity, and about as good as far as cutting speed as the norton and Pferd.

For price reference, I pay $1.35 for the Nortons at Home Depot, The Hilti was around $3.00 at a (rarely found) Hilti stocking home depot, $1.75 for Sait's at the local industrial supply, and the local welding supply (roberts oxygen) will sell me the Pferd's at $2.00 each.

I think the price difference in the Pferds is definately justified over the Nortons based on how long they last.

Anyone tried the Metabo cut off wheels?

I've never used a Pferd cut off wheel, but being in the small engine, lawnmower business I can tell you that Pferd is the best chain saw tooth file. Followed by Vallorbe then Oregon in terms of quality and cut. By the way, Pferd is a take off on Preferred.

I use Pferd almost exclusively -- buy them in cases from our local contractor supply house. They're hands down the best wheels i've ever used. They last darn near forever - I completed an entire SOA project on my Jeep with only 2 or 3 wheels. Plus -- at least here -- they're $.50 cheaper than the Norton wheels!

Does anyone know if Pferd makes flap discs too? I would like to find some that last a little longer....

They sure do. I havnt tried them, but I am going to pick up some whne i go to get some more of those cut off wheels tomorrow.

I love flap wheels, but also dont like that they dont last very long. The nortons and sait ones loose a lot of grit after just a minute of use or so, and I dont bear down on them.

I also want to try the pferd roloc discs, they make those as well, in several different types of grit.

By the way, I did a fair ammount of cutting today, and still havnt changed out that pferd wheel since I put it on the grinder late yesterday afternoon.

Now I know why the welding supply was giving out samples, these are like candy. I used a pferd cut off wheel extensevily all day yesterday (Im on vacation from work this week), the same one I used saturday night, and all day sunday! Im not sure its cutting as well as it did in the begining, now that its getting smaller, but it still cuts nicely. I would have gone throuhg 8-10 bucks in nortons by now.

Just ran across this. Pferd also means horse in German.

Brady

I think thats the actual meaning. Their logo is a horse. The guy at the welding shop pronounced the name as "ferd". I ordered some more cutt off wheels, and some of their flap wheels. I'll report on the flap wheels after I get some use with them.
