I'm not sure this fits heating/cooling but I do want to move some air. Does anyone have a 20-30 inch shutter type exhaust fan that is relatively balanced and would recommend? There are so many choices out there I'm getting frustrated. Thanks

I've got one in my shop. Don't know the brand, (may be a Dayton.) but it pulls a lot of air and is relatively quiet.

Worked great until I looked up at it a couple of years ago on a -5 degree February afternoon and saw light (and cold air) streaming through the shutters while the fan was off.

As soon as the snow melted, I climbed up a ladder and sealed the opening from the outside with a piece of 2" foam board.

Haven't turned it on since.

You can see the one I put in on the 3rd page of my build thread. We seal it off during the winter and I have a piece of window screen over the over the outside of it and that increased the noise level somewhat. But it works good, moves a lot of air.

I have read from a number of folks to stay away generally from anything with the Maxx Air branding due to not great quality, often imbalance type stuff.

Canarm is more $, don't know anything else about them.

Check out J&D fans made in Wisconsin.

Marketed primarily to the to Farmer w a practical GJ mentality, they are great quality and reasonably priced.

Best online pricing seems to be at Global Industrial Supply. Marc

Consider building a plywood box on inside, NOT outside, w a sliding 1/4" ply door if needed in winter, and a slide in screen for summer, slide out to hose clean quickly, slide back in.. done.

Modify that idea if in severe winter climate. Marc

Thanks for the input guys, I like the idea of USA made and also the pricepoint on the J and D stuff.
Marc: I am near the east coast of NC. More worried about cold air leaking out in the summer. I was thinking of building some type of interior box like that.
RAYJAY: Can you take some pics of your cover on the inside?

I just put a 24" variable speed Canarm fan in my new shop. I really like it and was surprised by the low sound level.

The variable speed is nice as well. Like most others, I will build a box around mine that will accept a slide in panel or a furnace filter to keep the dust off the side of the building and fan blades.

If poultry is raised in your area check with a equipment supply company, there are lots of choices out there

Yup, thats the angle, "Ag" use, best stuff, reasonable pricing.

And like rkevins said above, again, that's the angle.

Just remember those guys buy some huge fans w fancy housings, cause they need LOTS of CFM.

WAY more than any average shop.

BUT look at ALL the J%D offerings, huge price range.

I go with Post # 12 by DTE , drilled it down for us.

Thank you DTE, on the money.

That link should be a sticky.

I've replied with this answer many times.

And build the plywood INSIDE box for screen filter pull out slot to hose of in driveway, or slide in door for winter cold season if you have it.

Just a quick simple thin plywood box w a slot for either a screen OR alternately a solid panel.

VERY important it's quick to remove and hose off, or it will be procrastinated.

Yes, the gravity hanging actuated by air flow louvers definitely will leak some.

You want tighter ??

Available motor actuated and better sealing louvers for an additional definite chunk of $. Marc

I've been trying to spec a shutter exhaust fan that I can reverse and automatically open the dampers in reverse with a motor controlled operator.

I'm leaning towards a 30" JD Mfg VES Shutter Exhaust Fan for my 48x60x14 shop. Being made in the USA is huge for me. It's rated at 6770cfm on high and should give me 10 exchanges per hour.

I was initially going with a 3-phase unit that I could run a 230v single-phase input to 230v 3-phase output VFD for infinite adjustability and reversing in one package. But the cost for that over a single phase unit with a drum switch doesn't really justify it.

Included with agricultural application are greenhouse exhaust fans. Besides the J&D mentioned above, there is also Schaefer and ACME brands available from greenhouse wholesalers. There are direct drive and belt drive units.

I'm planning on punching a hole in the wall for an exhaust fan this winter, and this is the main thing I'm concerned with. Gravity operated louvers likely aren't going to be able to overcome the stack effect and effectively seal when the fan is off. Worst case scenario here is +70º air trying to flow out into -40º outside air.

One thing I'm considering is adding on an insulated duct on the outside, with the idea that the warm air isn't as likely to travel downward and so should help seal. And if it still needs some additional help to stop leaks, it's a lot more convenient to access an opening near the ground.

Southern part of a very corrupt state
I used the "Global" 20" and WOULD NOT buy it again!
Rattles, tried dampen it , but no avail, product should perform without my help!
My old shop uses a 30" belt driven= slower speed , fan and it is marvelous, quiet, and never gives trouble, 2 speeds.

I have a Canarm, 24". Very good quality IMHO. Pretty much the standard in barn fans here. It moves a ton of air, not very quiet though. Only issue is that the louvers wont stay closed in some cross winds, not a big deal. I made a hinged box out of plywood that has good gasketing around the perimeter for winter when I rarely use the fan, I pull the box closed with a small turnbuckle for a tight seal. Then the box isnt closed it is held open with a piece of jack chain and a hook

Picked up a Dayton 24" 120v with automatic shutters off CL a few months ago. Mounted it in the uninsulated loft peak of the barn with an automatic thermostat to help push the heat out and circulate the air. Works great. Best part, only paid $100 for it.
