Not sure but it loks like some type of control cable plugged in there, perhaps to operate a elevator, lift, crane, who knows?

Is the bottom hole threaded? There are connectors that use threaded retainers like that.

If you pull it out of the box, how many wires go to it, and where does the wire go from there?

Is your friend a Soviet spy planted here years ago?

Where do the wires go to? Probably a control box with a brand on it.

In all my years (oh, about 50) of working on electrical/electronics that is a connector that I don't recall seeing before. Maybe see if you can trace the wire and see where it goes. Another thing would be to see if there are any measurable voltages on any pins. Use caution, there could be line voltage there (but I doubt it.)

was it inside or outside?

looks like a lot of milspec plugs, maybe he had a setup for some kind of old equipment so he could just plug in and go.

if it was exterior then it was possibly for plugging in an rv/camper or something to give it power, coms, etc.

May have been some sort of remote control of something. Just a WAG on my part.

I see bricks in the background, stainless steel plate and a flip cover so i'm guessing this is outside, I would WAG that its a charger for some type of cart ,think motorized wheel chair. It almost looks like the plugs from a medical/hospital bed

Could it be a cable connector with an outlet cover over it? Likely it's off some old industrial D.O.D. equipment. My dad use to have this kind of stuff laying around from the fifties/sixties and adapted it as it fit his needs.

Pull the cover and see what the wiring attached to it looks like. If its small gauge wire its likely low voltage or audio in nature.

I dunno, but the same question was asked four years ago on Reddit with the same picture.

That is where you plug in the hellaphino.

I'm going to say it is a homemade plug for something. noting the gap on the bottom inside the hole it looks to me like someone took a round exterior cover and used it with a square 9 pin jack. I have no idea what they might have used it for but I can't think that any company would put out a plug like that with a gap, particularly if it was electrical.

hmm, the reddit link says it was just posted. Google reverse image said it was from 2010.
Mark your calendars, Google was wrong!

Lol, he must have inquired about it on that site as well. :headscrat

Here it is on reddit

The photo has a TapaTalk logo in the bottom right corner. There is no file information at all and no camera type or anything. Someone had to remove all of that. At the file name is gibberish.

I suspect it is just a troll post to get people to speculate. I suspect the OP has no idea what it is or where it is.

Maybe there is a contest to find out what this is for and a couple of people posted bogus threads to get someone to furnish the answer.
The OP basically lied to us. But not the first one

What does "I'm 99% certain it's in the U.S. " even mean?

Especially given the "I know it was an exterior wall" bit.

Wow...tough crowd here...It IS at a friend of mines home, never seen it in person. He asked me if I knew, he may have posted the picture at reddit before, no idea... I certainly wasn't trolling, he sent it to me and I thought for sure someone here would know....but instead you get typical forum BS....sorry I was not responding...been away for a while.
