Anyone know what model drill press this is?

Iv searched online and looks like a Delta/Rockwell 17-600 but it's different.
It has a 3ph 1hp motor and I cant figure out what is on the side where the spindle return spring usually is.

It was on ebay for $250 and it's local. I havent seen it so Im a little worried. Once I get it home Im going to take it apart, sandblast everything, repaint it, and get a variable frequency drive to run it since I only have single phase in my shop. It'll beat the heck out of table top hf one I have.

Might be a buffalo 18. but the head casting doesn't look quite like an 18., Maybe an earlier model?

DON'T "sand blast everything"...

Rough castings, fine, (But not my preference. look into using Electrolysis. it will generally take both rust and paint off..)

By sand blast everything I mean to remove the layer or paint someone sprayed it with. Iv seen electrolysis stuff before. I'll have to try it out. Im not going to sand blast the support tube, table top, top cover, spindle. Just the base, bottom of the table, and outside of the main body. I am about to rent a soda blaster for my caddy project so I might wait and use it.

15" Rockwells don't have the extended Spindle and the heavy duty tables with lift cranks.

That's close but the top cover on mine is slanted toward the back and the base is much larger leading me to believe it's a 17".

Yes it looks like a Rockwell, not sure of the size/model.

Delta rockwell 17". Check the serial number on the left (as you're looking at it). That should help you date it to exactly what model 17" it is. My guess is late 60's. Here a link to OWWM:

BMcC is correct, it is a late model delta 17", production table, MT2 female taper spindle, could go either way on the pulley set, but probably slow speed. It is a stout machine ~350+lbs.

The thing on the side is the return spring assembly, and Delta's new fangled depth indicator. The various holes are for optional attachments like power down feed and foot feed. I'm digging the orange motor.

Considering that drill press had already been around for ~25 years I guess they felt it needed an upgrade. That is dang near digital compared to the one on my 1939 or 40 edition 17".

I got the drill press home and started stripping it down with some paint stripper. The drill press tag says 17-600 1335448 which is a 1963 model according to Vmwk.
I also stripped the paint covering the motor tag and found out that's its a 3/4hp and not a 1hp like the ebay description says. Im a little pissed about the hp difference. Is 3/4 vs 1hp really that big of a difference?

No, the difference will be negligible in normal use.

That model came standard with a 1/2 HP motor, so 3/4 HP is plenty.

The optional 3/4 HP and 1 HP motors were recommended when the drill press was equipped with power feed (which yours doesn't have), or for use in a production environment.

I doubt you will have an issue.

Most common shop/home DP's come with 1/3 or 1/2 HP motors I put a 3/4 HP on my old DP only because I did a lot of hole sawing in steel and that bogged it down.

Keep in mind the larger you drill the slower you turn the bit, so you also get the gear down factor in your favor.

here are the MFG recommendations for my new (to me) Canedy-Otto 18" DP (slightly larger than your Delta Rockwell. 3/4 HP should be fine...

I retrofitted my Delta DP 17-600 about 5 years ago with the Harbor Freight slotted table. The OEM 11" Square table was pretty useless.

That's a magnetic motor starter with overload relay. The on-off pushbutton station on the front of the head casting controls it.

Your VFD probably comes with on-off control, but maybe not with overload protection.

Any good VFD should do away with that switch box, probably be a good place to mount the VFD.

I dig the box itself. It's cool as hell. I just didnt know if I had to keep the guts themselves. I'd like to have reverse for tapping stuff and removing boken bolts with left hand drill bits. I do want to remove the box mounted to the front that houses the on/off switch. I'd love to find the original switch plate but I might have to settle with something else.

You can use the original switch to control the VFD, but as mentioned above, a 1/4 HP VFD isn't going to cut it.

The VFD will be programed by you, which is real easy to setup. On my Teco there are approx. 30 different parameters to control. Its very versatile.

Drum switch in the back for forward/n/reverse. At first i thought the drum switch was going to be a pain to reach for taping, but with the foot feed it works out well.
