Anyone know what these are?

I just started working on the garage back wall in anticipation of getting it sorted. There are two "electrical boxes" above my circuit panels that I have no idea what they could be. Anyone have any ideas? Especially the one on the right, almost looks like some sort of buzzer on it. The last photo is of the box on the left with the cover plate removed. Any help would be appreciated.

The one on the right looks like a doorbell power supply.....

That's a transformer. It could either be for a door bell or furnace thermostat. It's easy to get a reading off the terminals for voltage and then try shutting off the breaker to the furnace.
Give it a shot. I could be wrong but a few houses I've owned, had these.

most likely a door bell transformer. Most of the time a transformer for a furnace would be close to the furnace

Cost.

Cheaper to run CL2 wire than line voltage wire.

And theyre not always in garages.

Mine is in my hallway coat closet.

Code requires any splice or tap in a line to be made inside a box that is accessible. The box on the left is a simple splice and the box on the right is a simple tap for the door bell transformer. I try to do this in the attic if I have access but sometimes there is no option and you have to do it in a wall.

if it is 16V on the output it's a door bell... think all door bell transformers are 16V AC.

They could be 12V or 24V as well, it just depends.
