It is good for young guys to see,,, I know it sounds funny but tools are a poor investment, they are actually an expense. In this case it seems likely the original seller here has went to great time and expense, probably less than an expensive hobby these days, if he paid interest etc. Out a lot of money over a career that could have been made with modest equipment. This was likely all the way along, could have made the last payment yesterday, boy that would have paid off.
Ask that man why he goes to work every day,,, probably so I can pay for my tools. His accountant will tell him you should saved twice as much and spent half and he would have been ahead of the game by a long shot for the common mechanic, avg lets say or flat rate.
Personally would be glad to log a day less a week over the year,,, or more. Probably use savings to spend a week in Hawwaii every year for free.
This is not to say someone shouldnt spend with the tool man but thats why the argument has to be said with some spit about it being worth it. Its a guys money, can spend it anyway he wants but as a statistical/practical matter it isnt worth it.
I spose if I was a lucky lotto winner maybe,,,,,, and I doubt that,,,, I would have to have so much it didnt make a difference,,, about like a boat, it needs to be a passion,, but those things are not worth it to me if I got to punch a clock, ha. If I am going to mechanic every day its gonna be drive a 1500$ car and provide about as little as I need while they still pay me.
If I was starting over would be a power shopper, certainly wouldnt turn down a deal on something vintage if it popped up but in general would play Sears, HF and Walmart into a 400$ tool box and pick off a few brand name trade level tools I had to really lean on every day.
I was showing a bud a system the other day,,, he says too, we only use 2 sockets out of some sets,, ha. No point in wading thru the rest for those we use daily. But all that if a guy is working by the hour is to impress each other, customers do not care and when they look thru the window don't know who was who anyway 99% of the time.
In my shop no one ever pays attn to the tools other than its obvious we got stuff. No one is going to pay more because they parade someone in front of the tool box
