I agree, seems like a weak effort to ask for so much. So few people have that much $ to put down all at once on tools.

Do people ever buy a lot this large? $40,000 that is just insanity. If you can afford to buy that set up wouldn't you already have the tools to support the payment?:dunno:

I will be a millionaire several time over before I ever bother owning $75,000 worth of tools. Anyone who owns this much should not need to sell it... ever. What a waste.

I love how just because people have a big tool set they think they can get their money back on it. Hes going to have to come to grips with the fact that tools dont have **** for a resale value. Ive accepted it.

The bigger reality is, nobody is going to buy an entire collection like that, at that price, in one fell swoop.

And, the sellers are too lazy to part it out. In many cases, so lazy that they'll end up taking such a deep discount on it to sell it in a single go to someone who's going to eBay off the lot.

I buy and sell a lot of tools and have trouble finding people with $3,000 for a real nice box. Finding someone with $40K that needs or wants those tools is about impossible. What really amazes me is these folks are often arrogant too. The only way to get about 1/2 your money back is to part it out and that is a ton of work. One of my customers, a business owner did drop $24K on a huge load of Snap on tools, but it was about $100K in tools supposedly. Oh, he didn't buy them from me but he did drop $3k with me in one fell swope, all tools no box.

I would never want to have a box where I needed to call a flat-bed wrecker move it!

And when they do move it, they always dent or scratch it...

That guy spent way too much on his box size, and too little on the tools inside it. The photo of the top drawer tells it all.

Nobody has $40K to spend on something like that. That guy is gonna need to either part every little thing out, or sell it all for like $10K to a pawnshop.

It is good for young guys to see,,, I know it sounds funny but tools are a poor investment, they are actually an expense. In this case it seems likely the original seller here has went to great time and expense, probably less than an expensive hobby these days, if he paid interest etc. Out a lot of money over a career that could have been made with modest equipment. This was likely all the way along, could have made the last payment yesterday, boy that would have paid off.

Ask that man why he goes to work every day,,, probably so I can pay for my tools. His accountant will tell him you should saved twice as much and spent half and he would have been ahead of the game by a long shot for the common mechanic, avg lets say or flat rate.

Personally would be glad to log a day less a week over the year,,, or more. Probably use savings to spend a week in Hawwaii every year for free.

This is not to say someone shouldnt spend with the tool man but thats why the argument has to be said with some spit about it being worth it. Its a guys money, can spend it anyway he wants but as a statistical/practical matter it isnt worth it.

I spose if I was a lucky lotto winner maybe,,,,,, and I doubt that,,,, I would have to have so much it didnt make a difference,,, about like a boat, it needs to be a passion,, but those things are not worth it to me if I got to punch a clock, ha. If I am going to mechanic every day its gonna be drive a 1500$ car and provide about as little as I need while they still pay me.

If I was starting over would be a power shopper, certainly wouldnt turn down a deal on something vintage if it popped up but in general would play Sears, HF and Walmart into a 400$ tool box and pick off a few brand name trade level tools I had to really lean on every day.

I was showing a bud a system the other day,,, he says too, we only use 2 sockets out of some sets,, ha. No point in wading thru the rest for those we use daily. But all that if a guy is working by the hour is to impress each other, customers do not care and when they look thru the window don't know who was who anyway 99% of the time.

In my shop no one ever pays attn to the tools other than its obvious we got stuff. No one is going to pay more because they parade someone in front of the tool box

Long Beach CA, the sewer by the sea.
Those overhead bins are more costly per sq ft than a Beverly Hills mansion with a beach front Malibu property thrown in. More than Donald Trump's penthouse.

But I love it. I wonder if the guy will take a check for the whole 75K and send me back the difference less shipping?

No kidding. Does it have a Murphy bed or a sleeping berth? In a lot of places 75K would buy a small building and you might get some tools with it.
I agree. There was a guy and wife tried to open a small garage,,, at home,,, in a 1 bay deal with the rest of it stuffed to the gills with hi dollar stuff, needless to say even though the guy was a gifted mechanic the area and work couldnt tolerate this, he had long career as service mgr in a couple deals including a stint at factory service. He was proud as punch of the 20000 dollars in boxes, a couple looked new and a 2500 scan tool etc. This was alright when he have other career but was a huge drag especially with poor marketing skills and experience where he was a cog in the wheel, a good one but still..

A garage the size of a good living room filled with boxes worth,, or cost,,, way more than itself and a big ole dest right in the way for the wife to do a couple invoices,,, an expert in trouble shooting, the man the dealers too new car problems to, now trying to make it on his own in general service working on general problems on 5 to 10 yrs old cars that are almost neglected at best.

He could tolerate all this when he was on a payroll taking 70 hrs a week. Neither one realize it wasnt going to make it, I tried to throw a couple bones that way but he was a super guy but just wasnt going to make it. Looked like he had to run to the store for every clamp.

He should have named the place Dons Drivability or similar,,, the place to take it when everyone else has had a turn,,, specialize in Fords etc. You could still have sold an oil change on the bill but didnt need to fish up customers with specials or competitive work.

If I had time I would have tried to hire the guy right when his biz tanked.
