Hey guys, I'm getting ready to do a resto on a 103.0803 belt/disc sander and wanted to know if anyone has been through one yet? Mainly interested in what you did for the roller tires, I think I have the rest under control. Also looking for a pole mount plate for this thing if anyone knows where one is. The base is roughly 8x16.

Funny, I just acquired one of those. Ugliest tool I have bought yet but despite appearances, I think it has had little use. I was wondering about the roller tires too. One of mine is missing (or was bare), the other sun eaten. I was thinking about cleaning up the rust and using contact cement and some sort of thin rubber sheet glued on a diagonal. I'm curious what others will have to say.

I was thinking a length of bicycle tube contact cemented on worse case scenario. Coat the wheel with glue then roll it on like a condom gluing the inner side of the tube as I roll it on. I think I could stretch a standard tube on there but they do make fat tire tubes too so idk.

These sanders are awesome, I picked this one up at a garage sale in pieces for $10, already had the stand and motor, then fabricated the motor mount using muffler clamps and scrap steel.

Both rollers had tires according to the sears parts direct info, my top one is cracking and falling apart but the bottom is completely gone. It still runs but if you push too hard it will stop the belt. I'd like to tear it down and change the bearings, clean it up and paint it and run new rubber.

You don't need the roller tires. The belt arches a little more as it leaves the platen for the rollers, but I have seen no ill effect from this. My tires swelled from being under water 15 years ago, so I just cut them off, cleaned the rollers, and proceeded to use it. There should still be enough belt take up, as yours is like mine.

$10! Nice. I paid $25 for mine. It's missing the rod that supports the work surface, and one of the governor springs in the motor rusted to the point it snapped. Each should be replaceable. And hey, it came with a 24" rest for a 1950's, 60's Craftsman wood lathe.

I have a Craftsman Mod 113.22541 and the rollers for the belt are just bare aluminum. I have read somewhere on another woodworking forum that one guy tried wrapping the rollers with electrical tape....perhaps you can try that....or look up companies that bond or "vulcanize" rubber to metals. They can either do it or maybe suggest something.

I bought one of those model #113.226430 new probably around 1986/87 ?
Been using it sparingly for metal mainly. It came with just bare aluminum rollers. Think I've replaced the special drive belt once since new. Have no idea how many sanding belts I've gone thru, still tracks and works great. Think I paid $39.95 on sale way back when.

I've got one without the disc sanding attachment/end.. and about the only restoring I've done to it is paint, and recently changed to a higher hp motor and put it on a roll around base.. Seems like it would be fairly easy to preplace bearings on, etc..

I also have one, remember doing pinewood derby cars with my dad. My goal is to get it up and running again before my son hits Cub Scouts (about to turn 2). Rollers seem to be in decent condition for mine, so I may have gotten lucky.

Newer ones are all around in good shape, the older ones are usually worn and/or missing parts. The one Bob posted about is a newer integrated motor type and only 6" disc/ 4" wide belt iirc. The larger 9" disc/6"x48" belt has a separate motor.

I am doing a restore on mine as we speak. but mine is a little newer then yours Nine. Mine is a 50s model and as per the manual there are no tires on the rollers if your rollers are crowned you might be able to get away with no tires I would give it a try first. here is where I am on mine just waiting on the new bearings to arrive.

Yes but I'm looking for the original pedestal top plate for this model sander. I have it jury-rigged with a top plate from a planer and a chunk of wood atm so I could use it.

Edit, it's real sturdy from the front, when I dig into the disc real good I need to put my foot on the base for more leverage.

Do you still have the sander pedestal I sold you that doesn't match your earlier sander?

Yes BlueBolt, I still have it. I was going to use it temporarily so I could sell the planer double pole pedestal but decided to just wait til the top plate I needs turns up rather than double work.

Now that I have three of those sanders maybe I should just sell you the sander that was on it originally LOL.

Here is mine. I actually think these things look pretty cool. I too would be interested in the rubber roller solution when we find it!! I can get the belt fairly balanced but it will slip a bit. Anyway, I am really happy with this machine, it was in great shape when I found it and and I cleaned up the original paint. I like looking at all the other examples here!

Adrian yours must be later than mine. My King Seely is a decal that is about 70 still there, yours looks like the little metal ones that showed up later.

Here you go nine4gmc. I am not a complete expert on Dating these logos but it does look like early 1940s. I my Atlas lathe that is definitely 1937 has the same logo but in reverse colors. Anyhow, I really want to pursue the roller pads so if you do eventually find a solution please remember little old me! Cheers.

Hey, nine4gmc, where are you at with your sander? I posted a pic of the badge.

I look forward to seeing what your sander looks like on the pedestal stand.

Hey Adrian, I haven't had time to tear mine down yet, I just used it again the other day and I'm scared I will need it as soon as I do tear it down and my luck something will break or need ordering. It's pretty high on my list though, I may just go ahead and get on it this weekend since my girl will be gone, it'll give me something to do.

I appreciate the pictures, it looks like we have the same model by the pictures but mine is missing the logo so I didn't know what era it was. Can you confirm your model number when you get a chance? I can't believe yours has the long C logo, that's awesome and I hope we have the same model, I'll have to find a replacement badge for it when I get done restoring it. I thought this model would be the heritage logo because the long C sanders I have seen had a smaller base. IIRC, Jake restored one of the small base sanders already, I'll have to find the post and see.

Thanks again for the pictures and posting, I'll try to get on this thing ASAP!

Fortunately, I didn't need to do a restoration on mine. A model 103.08011 4x36 small base, long C logo. I just needed to clean it up and rewire the motor and switch. The only repair that was needed was the belt rest that I broke and Nine repaired for me.
(thanks again Nine, it's still holding up well )

This is an "as found" pic.

With the grey paint (and no pictures) I'd guess very late 40's, but more likely early to mid 50's.

Ahhh, Thanks Nine. I didn't connect the dots.
That would put the date sometime in the 40's then. Probably post-war. My bad.

I just picked up a 103.0803. Only $25 and it came with a router mounted with it. I am going to replace the motor with an old craftsman motor I have. Maybe down the road I can do a DC CONVERSION. I will clean it up to see how it cleans up but would like to paint it. What's the closest matching spray paint?

So it came with an original craftsman stand but I need to find a table for it. Mine only has the table support rod. One odd thing on this one is that the king sealey logo is painted on. I have a matching badge from a table saw I parted out which I will put on this after I paint it.

I just checked the classifieds and looks like the table has been sold already, I will keep an eye out for you another. I also checked my sander out again and mine has the same King Seeley painted on, that's why I could not find badge holes for the Cman logo.

Thanks. Yeah I posted a wanted ad on there. Here is the donor King sealey logo I finally have a use for. The motor I want to use is 3450 rpm so that's too fast. Maybe I'll look for DC motor.

I'm thinking that the logo was done with a water transfer decal. I have a similar Heritage logo on a 12" disk sander that looks the same. After looking really close with a magnifying glass, I could see the edge of the decal hiding in the paint. That's why the missing bits in the logo look like chips and not like a normal scratch.
