Thinking about making my triple garage into a double and a single (on the inside..). I am thinking I can create my hobby car area and separate it from the bikes, camping equipment, etc. Anyone else do this?

That's sorta been my plan. What are you hoping to achieve? I want to do it because I want to have a clean/storage side and a dirty/shop side. I also plan to only heat the shop side.

If you only want to do this to seperate your bikes and cars, I don't think it makes a lot of sense.

I've thought about it if I ever get a chance to build a bigger garage. The idea of having a area where you could have it heated and cooled is appealing. However I would want like a 1 and a half size stall so that I could have plenty of room to work around in it.

I would assume two things here;
1. The two car side is the shop.
2. The single would be the stall nearest the house door.

I'm going to use a shop curtain to get myself a separate work area in the one car bay of my 3 1/2. It's about $400 for a one or two piece 25' x 9' vinyl with a window and a track. I can't recall the name of the company right now, but the had lots of show and sample stock which could be had a a significant discount. I'll post up a link after I figure out who it was.

Thanks for the replies guys. My intention for this would be to:

Stalls 1+2 - Keep them open with all the usual clutter inside (bikes, x-mas decorations, kids stuff etc.) as well as two daily driver cars and all the mud, gravel and snow they bring into the garage (I live on in the country)...

Stall 3 - Create a wall that separates this from the other area of the garage. This would create a dedicated stall for my car hobby and related tools.

The area that would become stall 3 is where I spend most of my time right now (Workbench, tools, etc). My thoughts are to create a "man space" in there that is easy to keep clean and further equip it with more auto related tools. I would like to put epoxy flooring in as well as a lift. The triple garage is over sized so each stall has more than enough room to park, open doors, move around the vehicles, etc.

The whole garage is heated right now (forced air). The wall that would separate stall 3 would be 8 feet high with a opening in the middle (sort of like a window but without the window) and also a walk through doorway. The ceilings are 12 feet high. I was thinking that this will allow hot air from my garage heater to get at the 3rd stall this way.

The whole concept would be to create a visual separation between the 3rd stall and the rest of the garage but not to completely close it off. The 3rd stall is the furthest away from the house but it is closest to the man door to the outside.

Anyone see any downsides? Or other comments?

A single stall would make a tight fit for a lift and any benches in most garages.

I wouldn't go with a solid wall.
A curtain will do the job but allow you the whole space as one room if the need ever came.

Goff's was the place I dealt with for the curtain. They are in WI, and went out of their way to find me demo stock at an affordable price.

Years ago my friend lived in a house that had a 5 car garage. It was freaking cool. Anyways it was setup as a 2 2 1. They weren't garage folks so the first garage was storage the second cars, the third was a single that was divided by a wall but had a garage door. The guy had it set up for his fishing gear. To top it off was an apartment on top of the garage. I would buy that house in a heart beet if it ever comes up for sale.

i used to have a setup like that. I built a 8ft wall with a door between the bays. Just studded it out and screwed up plywood. I had the one bay for wood working and kept all the mess in that one bay. Worked great!

One of my neighbors has that setup, 2 + 1. Looks unbalanced on the house because it's attached and the house has a second story above the garage. It's much more functional than a 1x1x1 I would assume however.

a friend did that...sort of
he added a slightily oversized stall onto his garage and made it with lights on the ceiling and walls. he set the space up to use as a paint booth, detail booth, and then when otherwise not being used he stores his show car in there to keep it clean and free from potential damage

I plan to split my 4 car garage in half, but I want to put in an 18' wide door to do it. I figure that way when the door is open, it will still feel like a large area and when I close it, I heat and cool only the half I work in.

I did just that two years ago. Put up a nine foot wall and insulated with drywall in the one car area. It is adjacent to a fourth bay that is heated. I put in a pull down stairway in the unheated two bay area and use the ceiling area for storage. I park the daily drivers in the unheated area and the streetrod in the heated area. Works well for me.

I did the same thing. It is nice to keep all the dust out of the main garage.
