I'm in the process of building a "hurricane / tornado proof" (resistant more accurate) garage and oriented the roof to include solar panels (which incidentally are one of the first things to be destroyed in a wind storm). System is spec'd at 10KW which should be more than enough to provide for the "basics".
Credits as most know are expiring and the current negotiations / language in the 2016 Federal Budget / Continuing Resolution contain renewals for the solar credits.
Payback period for solar is not attractive, but we're using it to provide "off grid" , emergency power. Panel prices are down but so is the longevity (most claim 25+ years, but the reality is far shorter)
