Any reason why you would need both? Other than space or the cool look of an older press? It seems like the hydraulic press would handle most jobs. Is there more finesse with an arbor press?

Yup, ya answered your own question. I use my arbor press all the time. It's very handy for smaller assemblies and has a better feel when needed. For some processes such as broaching for me it just seems easier with the arbor press then the big boy. another consideration is they are much more accurate then your normal press.

Hard to say from the pictures, if the hydraulic is a full size standalone, I would use the arbor press as a tabletop for smaller jobs. It would be convenient and it also looks pretty cool.

Necessity? No.

The bench top a-frame style presses are pretty good substitute for an arbor press, i have pneumatic jack on mine so its a bit quicker than a bigger shop press. I mostly use mine to rivet things, but it can do everything an arbor press can do.

Ayuh,.... An arbor press is quicker, so better for production runs,...

I agree, a hyd. press will cover most Anything I gotta do,...

It's all about the feel. Have both, a large arbor press, and a 20 ton hyd., way easier to "feel" what is actually going on with the arbor press.

Depends on your needs. If your just doing general automotive work then a hydraulic press is all you need. If you rebuild things that have small objects that need pressing. Or do alot of tedious work then a small arbor press is usefull. Larger arbor presses can do alot of heavier work but for any heavy pressing a hrdraulic shop press is hard to beat. For finess and control a arbor press is hard to beat. Have both myself nice to have both.

i agree, you can get alot better feel with the arbor press great for bearing for giving them some tunks.
i have a 50 ton hydraulic and even with the graduated resivoir you don't have a good feel not for bearings

I use my Arbor press for replacing bushings on engine motor mounts and differential mounts. :D

I use both in our shop. I really like the arbor press for pressing in bushings and small bearings as it is much easier to wreck them if not perfectly straight. Also the go to tool to press in seals.

If you take a close look at the arbor press above you'll see some machined end in it held in with the screw sticking out the side of the ram. Arbor presses come with solid rams and ends with a hole in them for attaching tooling for production runs. When I worked in a plant making automated assembly machines it was common to set up an arbor press to install a few hundred dowel pins or bushings for some project. Once the fixture was set up some minion could set for a day or two pressing gizmos.
