Just ran across this in marketplace. Could any one tell me what brand or year? No other info is on listing. Asking $45. Worth it?

Jim: i'm not positive about the lathe, but probably a Craftsman brand and maybe 50's or early 60's. the stand is worth that much so if the lathe works and you get the clamps too i'd say you got a deal.

the stand can also be used for Craftsman planers and i've even seen some table saws on that stand too.

Ok. Sounds doable. I have to admit, I know some things about wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers and some general all around hand tools, but when it comes to the big power tools like this, I have to plead ignorance. I've never had a lathe and have always wanted one. Looked a a Craftsman 1hp on the marketplace but after reading the reviews decided not to buy it.

So for $45 bucks, I'm willing to lose that much, since I'm experimenting. Who knows, maybe they'll take $35. Asking never hurts! JP

JIM: i'm not sure how good that Craftsman's lathe was/is, but I know their motors and their stands are great. it might be a great place to start as you say with a little investment especially if the seller has any tools to throw in.

just an FYI that a lathe can be pretty dangerous so make sure to have everything secure and proper safety gear on before turning the power switch on.

good luck

Thank you. I remember Mr. McClain, in shop class 45 years ago, always stressing safety and ENFORCING the rules with a paddle, just in case you survived the mishap, lol! Drivesitfar: I've kept up with a lot of your posts. I love the bench vices and those 2 big welders you got a few months back. Didn't get to read how those turned out though.

Thanks everyone for your advice. If I can get this, I'll be sure to let you know, with pics too!

Jim: a courtesy pic of my restored Lincoln welder that is patiently waiting for a power plant and a huge garage build to house it.

yep i've got a couple vises too.

funny you mention that shop teacher 45 years ago cause it was about 50 years ago when I was last on a wood lathe in 8th grade woodshop class. I still use the bowl I turned in that class for my spare change.

the nice thing about this little Craftsman or maybe it's an Atlas or ?? lathe is that if it's not big enough or you find something better you can probably use the motor and stand for your upgraded lathe.

yep don't want a piece of wood flying at your head at the speeds a lathe can spin them.

cheers

Sorry it's taken this long to post. Have been moving to another state and it's taken me longer than I anticipated.

No, I did not get it. When I messaged the seller it was sold lending pick up then shortly after that the list was marked sold.

I'm keeping my eyes open for another one like that. I will eventually get one. Got the itch. JP
Jim: did you get to see that Lathe in person or maybe buy it? what was it and what size was the motor?

Jim: maybe put in SHOPSMITH in your search parameters and see if a nice one with accessories comes up cause I've heard they are decent and they have many attachments for an all in one sort of machine if you are limited on space.

I'm going to set up my dad's Shopsmith in his basement's garage cause i don't think he's used it maybe two times in 20+ years. maybe we'll both be spinning wood again.

good luck in your search.

The old Craftsman's were decent entry level wood lathes. I started out with one. Yes, it was not the easiest to set up or use but it worked well enough to get me started. I sold mine when I moved and bought a Jet mini. That upgrade was like going from a moped to an auto.

I hope you find a good lathe because turning can be fun.
