Asphalt Costs

Hey guys,

I just got a quote on asphalt. My driveway is 560 feet and they were going to do it 10 feet wide. The price was $9600. I know its a lot of driveway but I just can't put 10K into it. Does anyone have some ideas that could cost less?

Thanks
John

Hey John, that sounds like a deal to me. I had asphalt done, it was about 32ft wide and 40ft long and it was about $4000 for that.

The base that asphalt companies use is usually a crushed concrete composition. When rolled, its fairly durable. Perhaps get a quote for that now and then do asphalt in one or two years. The $9600 seems reasonable to me for 560 feet long.

I would personally just go gravel for a driveway of that size.. Unless you have the extra money to spend. You can always pave it later.

Thanks guys. I also thought that the price was not that bad, but its the spending 10K part that is killing me. I could do so much more that is fun with it. :)

Mine is being paved this week. 1,756 feet, 12 feet wide, 3" deep. $30,000. At least there are 3 houses all going in. But, after 11 years, I am tired of a gravel drive. Bad part is I have had it quoted by the same person 3 previous times. $15,000, $22,000, $27,000 over 7 or so years. Asphalt just keeps going up. At least here (Alabama), it did not go down last year when petrolium prices did.

does that include removing the existing driveway and prep. work? I was thinking about replacing my cracked concrete driveway. one company quoted me about $20K for my 100ft. (12ft wide in the first 70ft and 25 ft wide in the last 30ft). for 560 ft, $9600 sounds a steal.

I had a 1/4 mile driveway with rock for about 10 years. 3 years ago I took the plunge and wrote the check for asphalt. Although, it seemed expensive, I would say its better than buying a toy. It is so nice for your cars to be clean and not turn into a rattle trap in a few years.

Spend the money you won't regret it.

I don't think you'll regret it either. You'll wish you could have afforded years ago.

That's sound a great price for that size of driveway to me.

My driveway is about 300' long. Part of it is steep and would wash badly when there was a heavy rain. Grass grew over the gravel in the middle and I just poured concrete in the track. As someone else mentioned, I just wanted to not have any mud that would rust out my fenders. I poured it pretty thin, so it cracked, but it is better than it was before.

I just had mine done this fall and it was ~$5300 for 2000 sq ft. $2.65 sq/ft

OP your driveway size would have been almost $15k for me to get paved here, so I say it's a smoking deal!

I'm in northern Md and had my driveway done for just a little under $2/square foot last year. Get good recommendations and shop around.

Thanks guys. I am going to talk to him and see what we can work out. Right now it is gravel. That price is for all work to be done. So I guess I am going to **** it up and have it done.

Thanks again for all the advice. This forum really is great.

Are all the ~<$2 to $3 prices for repaving existing driveways? I have a driveway which is approximately 32' wide by 24' deep. It is currently paved but it has settled and there are a few bumps from rocks (I assume) which must be below the asphalt.

What do you think I should expect to pay knowing there is likely some below ground excavation which may need to be done to get a better base this time around.

I bought the house about 2.5 years ago and the driveway does not appear to have shifted since then. The garage itself is about 35 years old but I do not know how old the driveway is.

He has since gone OOB and IMHO he deserved it..
I was not an educated consumer so it is poart my fault..
Next time it will be done right.

In my area that is probably a couple thousand high. I don't know all your details like how much grading is needed, do you need additional stone etc... Make sure you ask for a written quote specifying materials, quantities, and in place thickness a sketch of the project is also desirable to make sure you and the contractor are on the same page

We had crushed stone dust and I got tired of it tracking in the garage and wanted to use a snow blower on the tractor. There is nothing like a Bituminous driveway!

Be aware that blacktop is made with oil, so if you see a big drop in the price of crude, make a move on the paving.

I did my drive 3 years ago when oil prices were high. At that time I priced both concrete and asphalt. Concrete was actually cheaper....

Wow surprised to see concrete cheaper. . . Lots of energy goes into making and transporting concrete. With the Backtop does the quote include two layers? My first driveway 1500sq was just one layer of 3/8" got a good ten years out of it but started to crack within 5 yrs from the freeze cycles. Was cheap, no money and sick of the dirt/noise/dust/ and maintence of gravel. New driveway is two layers, first layer 3/4" binder with a top coat of 1/4". Expect it to last 20-30yrs. At the time the contractor was screaming about the cost of oil hitting $50 a barrel! Definitely find out how thick your finished driveway with be. Thick > lasts longer and more material. -Ed

Oh $8000 for 3000sq - 3yrs ago

If you don't want the dust of the gravel you could ask the asphalt company if they would sell you a RAP driveway. RAP is Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement and will go down just like gravel. They will spread it out, water and then roll. Should offer a nice solid drive for a lot less money. I work for large US asphalt paving company so if you have any questions let me know.
