No, those are from 2009.

These will not be out this year under the Astro brand. You will see them, they are awesome, but not this year under Astro.

I know you might not be able to answer this, but how are these going to compare to an Irwin Hanson HSS or the cheaper Irwin Hanson Carbon steel sets?

Are these supposed to be a top of the line product, or are they a solid and quality performer that people can actually afford (as the HSS taps and dies can be $600 for a relatively complete set- yikes!)?

Also, got a question about the die grinders you sell and I'd rather ask it here, than in a PM so others can find the same answer.

I was looking at die grinders on your website, and I noticed an inconsistency in regards to the power ratings on certain die grinders. On the page for the #202 (here), the power is listed as 1/2HP. Under the page for the #222 (here, which is a set containing #202 and #204), the power for the #202 is listed as 1/3HP?

The power ratings for the #204 are the same on its specific page and the page for the set (1/3HP). Is that rating also correct? I've been in the market for a die grinder for a few months and started looking at your products after asking about those taps and dies lol. I want at least 1/2HP though, and would prefer some sort of rubber boot/composite outside so my hand doesn't freeze to it, especially in the middle of winter!

The whole purpose of developing this kit was to make something in between HSS and the more common High carbon steel.

There's cheap "HCS" sets from China
There's more expensive USA made very decent HCS sets
Then there's very expensive USA made HSS sets.

The following is just my opinion and experience

Thing is, the #1 advantage to HSS is heat tolerance and resistance to deformation under high pressure/torque. Those are both attributes that are important to a machinist using a manual mill, lathe or CNC machine.

I've been doing testing for closing in on a year, and the heat and load levels you need to subject a tap to in order for HSS to start being advantageous compared to the Japanese alloy we're utilizing are not possible for a mechanic even with a cordless drill tapping consecutive holes without cleaning chips. HSS is also more brittle due to a very high Rc value in order to hold that edge under high load, a set made for mechanics can utilize a more durable misuse friendly tap and die while still holding that edge.

So the target was the (seemingly vacant) middle ground in capability, and perhaps a lower price point than US HCS via machining these pieces in Taiwan after importing the alloy.

Any warranty on the tap and dies or are they consumables?

Yes, warranty

Also, got a question about the die grinders you sell and I'd rather ask it here, than in a PM so others can find the same answer.

You're on the money. The page for that 2pc 222 looks to be a victim of cut and paste on the power rating. The straight die grinder is 1/2HP and the right angle is 1/3HP, you can tell by the diameter, there's no way around diameter for high HP air motors (unless you use turbine / turbo fan). If you see a "new" .75HP or .8HP or .9Hp or 1HP air tool that looks like the same bulk of a comparable (bare or rubber sleeved) model you're familiar with, be suspicious.

I'll have that spec page changed when I come in to work tmw. Thanks.

Dropping new snap ring pliers today. We didn't want to reinvent the wheel on these, went to the go-to factory that's making a lot of the best imported sets that you'll see out there on trucks.

When it comes to things like Snap rings, my job of field testing is pretty easy. Give em to our guys servicing tools in our parts warehouse - they are taking out snap-rings all day long. Been about 7-8 months, the handles look more brown than red now - but they seem to be holding up well.

Of course, you can break any snap ring pliers if you're determined enough.

Does anyone have any hands on experience with the Astro pneumatic board sanders? Looking at the 15" 888C, little bit more expensive than the seemingly equivalent IR one ....and they all look like and basically have the same specs as the $30 Harbor Freight one.. I'd just want to buy whatever one will last awhile and work right but cant really justify something like a Hutchins

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense that our 888C costs much more than the IRT315, but that's how it goes sometimes since we don't set pricing. Warehouses can sell at what they want to.

Buy the IRT315, it's the same quality.

The HF is not comparable.

The long fabled Ratchet and Release flare nut wrenches. You may have seen the beginings of this kit at SEMA. Since last year, we worked on unique larger sizes (different ratchet design and double pawl), are using a beefier alloy for the ratcheting jaws (4140 Cromoly), and made the kits simply the sizes most used in automotive applications.

We amalgamated around a dozen threads on forums like this of people's responses to what sizes they use as well as polled the list of shops we have a relationship with. Of course there's going to be a size you or someone else believes to be missing, however we think (and a lot of people agree) that having to buy all the sizes you don't or hardly use gets old. Extra when it's a specialty set that isn't the cheapest option.

when will these bad boys be out?

They're out now and we've shipped a bunch of orders to warehouse already.

Sure, let me put something together once I'm back at the office and can rope a car into one of our bays. Can't promise anything right away, though.

Thanks Chris. No worries on the time line.

I've seen similar products come and go. I always felt they came soooo close to achieving their goal...but they didn't quite make it. I hope AP's version takes the cake.

Why the cut-outs in the flare nut wrench handles? Style points or somewhere to slip additional leverage into?

Are there Astro Pneumatic tools in the pits at Le Mans?

I seem to recall the Audi team changing out an engine/transaxle in something like 48 minutes. Was Astro there?

Amateurs! Takes these guys 7 minutes to swap a transmission :p (another reason rally is incredible)

What is the stock level of the Onyx 210QL ? I have had one on order from Amazon, and it still shows 2-4 week delivery. Wondering if I should choose another vendor that has stock?

Thanks.

What is the problem with it?
Nothing is happening when I press the trigger except the gun just bypasses the air right back out the exhaust muffler

I always oil it too so that's not the problem

Thanks!

Hi Tech,

Was it out of the box this way? If you rotate the anvil by hand does it start to work again? Would you mind letting us have a look? This is the first example I've heard of. You'll get it repaired or a new one obviously.

Thanks for the reply.

Ive had it for about a year. It's an awesome gun.

I had a few problems in the beginning but nothing major.

My first problems:

The part that the quick connect male fitting screws into came loose and leaked air so I put it back with red locktite. Then I had the same problem with the 4 allen screws up by the anvil, causing an air leak so I fixed that the same way.

The gun has been problem free since then for about 8 months.

Now the air just bypasses the gun. Nothing happens at all when I press the trigger other than all the air exhausting right out the exhaust port where the muffler is. This happened all of a sudden out of nowhere.

Nothing happens when I turn the anvil by hand while pressing the trigger.

I would like to send it in to you as soon as possible so you can take a look because it's completely out of commission right now. Just let me know the address and it'll be on its way via USPS.

Thanks

In regards to the first two aspects, Eric O on the SMA Youtube channel actually pointed this out to me from the first batch of these. And since then were were able to manufacture them to avoid this from happening.

Your main issue, not sure what it could be. Sounds like worn rotr blades but you mention you oil it. Yeah, let us take a look.

Send it to 1230 Santa Anita Ave. #E, South El Monte, CA 91733 and we'll repair or replace it for you. Or just drop me a PM and I'll see if our Customer Service dept can take care of that.
