Have had some activity finally. Decided to gray the color of removed sockets, and list who they were sent to...perhaps will keep the thread from being abused.. Several have said they will be adding to the list: looking forward to their additions

hey, just saw this and wanted to say I think its a nice idea. may I make a suggestion? i think it might be helpful to know the posters location. if someone is giving me something for free, I personally would offer to pay for shipping, but it might not make sense if the person is on the other side of the planet. likewise, even if the person giving away wants to pay for shipping, I would feel bad if the shipping cost was really high. on the other hand if someone is in the same town, I might ask them if I could pick up the item.

I'm a little confused how this works. I have a lot of duplicates as well and I'm trying to fill out sets. Can we do trades to help each other out?

is anyone interested in what i just i did here? ( updated @ 2:00pm Eastern Time)
it's editable from the thread
i can take it down...

.

I like it, but I could see confusion start with people updating their posts, but not the spreadsheet. Basically I would be concerned about the posts not reflecting the spreadsheet, or visa versa.

I think this is freaking awesome. In fact, I'm half tempted to raid the bargain bin misc sockets from the local pawn, put together what sets I can from that, then give away the leftovers in that thread.

I like the "sender location" idea. Others feel free to chime in.

Trades are ENCOURAGED! The likelyhood of you finding someone who has what you want and vice versa are slim but if you get that lucky then by all means trade!

^^^ This. Exactly how this problem/ idea originated.

Luvit: And I'll have to learn that spreadsheet but I like the ease of use! Looks much easier than having to scroll up to see the "format" I attempted to lay out. This may actually be the direction this thread goes.

Whoa, after previewing my reply , I took a better look at the spread sheet.
I thought everybody had to have their own: lots of hunting....but if there is one consolidated spreadsheet....wow. I love it.
Pending most like the spreadsheet, I may have incorporate that into the first or second post which will eliminate scrolling / hunting for all who venture to this thread.

Thoughts/ Questions on the Spreadsheet. Especially looking for computer-guru advice:

  • Personally:
    1. I like it a LOT, but kinks would need ironing out to perfect / protect it.
    2. I actually think its better than having everybody replying to the thread.
    3. For now, if you use the spreadsheet, please post manually too. Just in case
  • Doubles:

    • As mentioned by others, can doubles be posted: if there are 5 of a specific socket available from multiple places... have them all listed?
  • Organization:

    • Can it auto organize? By brand first, then by part # alphabetically?
    • As another entry is added, will it find its place using the above auto-organize example
    • Even if it can't, its still an improvement over scrolling multiple pages of replies
    • Nevermind: I played with it and it organizes by whichever column you click on! :bitchslap:
  • Security:

    • Anybody can edit another member's sockets. No bueno.
    • Members would never screw with it, but what's to keep someone from defacing the spreadsheet.
    • Any way to allow edit/delete of ONLY your own listing within the spreadsheet?
    • Security would be my biggest worry, and only reason for suggesting a return to the manual format.

Luvit deserves some serious credit for the spreadsheet concept: idea and effort. I personally want to see it work as much as I do this thread.

You guys have no idea how thrilled I am to see this gaining traction:bounce:

if hotfr8 removes his post, then the spreadsheet can be post #2 or #3.
any posts prior to mine can point to my post with this link

i would list doubles.. because you never know when the first one will get shipped/deleted..
also, it depends on if the picker favors a certain source (for many reasons).

it will not auto-sort, yet.. i'll work on it, but probably will not find a good solution.

public access is really the only way users can easily add/delete their own data.
if the spreadsheet gets defaced i can pull-up the last good copy..
backups are automated with each change.
it feels redundant, but if people also post their list, it will BTT.

**There is not a good solution to protect the data
The reason is that they need to be savvy on copying / saving a link for each item on the list to edit/delete each item later.. this management method will fail at the user-level, every time.**

I think with a little bit of faith, public access can will work well, but there will be those times when something may go awry.. and I'll have to pull-up the auto backup.

Thanks for your feedback, man.

ok, i just thought of something very evil and wondering how we can prevent it. let's say someone who finds out about this thread starts requesting various sockets from people only to sell on ebay? so GJ members simply become a free supply of goods for such an evil person... how do we prevent that?

One of the other sites I visit has a "pay it forward" thread, where members offer items for free (related to the site theme). Only stipulation other than X number of posts & time in grade is that prior to requesting an item, you must have posted one and given it away.

I "own" the first 3 posts. Given the file and instructions, it can easily be put in the 2nd one- first should still be reserved for rules (which will need to be modified.)

I agree 100%

This was resolved. Look at spreadsheet, click on "Make". It organizes them alphabetically based on that column. Perfect.

So are you in favor or against posting a list as well? I can't decide.

I do not want mods to have to work to keep this alive/sorted. Willing to show a little faith and see what happens.

:banhim: There is really no sure-fire way to prevent it completely. Someone set on abusing this, will find a way. Posting the recipient of each socket does put in place some accountability but we are stuck with good will/faith...which, although there are rules in place, is the premise of this entire thread.

Edited the spreadsheet- added a column for recipient and inserted a few sockets from my list...still more work to do

Added 20 or so sockets to the list

Have realized that it takes a good while to add to the spreadsheet ..I'll have plenty of practice to speed up though

More coming. I raided the 1/4" bin at the pawn shop... brought home 93 1/4" drive sockets for under 10 bucks. Most of them I pieced into sets, those are some of the leftovers. No telling what I'll find in the 3/8" and 1/2" bins.

Yep.. if the spreadsheet dies, this will be the reason.

Hey now, you stay out of my Atlanta pawnshops! Your sockets went out today by the way...I almost just drove them over to you.

A side thought..does anybody else skip over the craftsman stuff in the loose tool bins?

I'll try adding mine later.

Well, if you go to a certain pawn shop and find the 1/4" bin is almost completely out of USA made sockets, you'll know I beat you to it... and if you wait very long, the 3/8" bin and 1/2" bin are gonna get cherrypicked too. :bounce:

Yay! Would've cost more in gas tho.

Toulson, do you just want me to remove that spreadsheet, or do you want to revisit it soon?

Hey Toulson ,

I think this is a great idea . I have lots of sockets out in the garage just in my way , I went and organized my tool boxes sometime this fall and filled up a big blue plastic container . I'm 6 foot 8 and 350 pounds and I can't pick it up , but there is more than just sockets in it . What about wrenches , ratchets and pliers etc . Do we have anywhere to post them . I dont care about selling them so the classifieds isnt at the top of my list , I really do believe in playing it forward . As for the few that will abuse this , I guess when I die I will come back and haunt them . I'm making a list

Funny part is , I have started to put 2 sets of each socket in my tool boxes and I have more missing than I thought . I guess over the years between loss and theft I'm paying a price . Organizing my tool box was a god send , now I just need to burn my 56 inch NAPA toolbox and get a real one .

Its still cold here in Newfoundland so it might take me a bit of time to dig them all out and get a list done up . While I'm in Canada , I don't mind shipping to the US , I'll have to think about the rest . Shipping might be to high for a bunch .

Cheers from Newfoundland
Don

I added links above the spreadsheet which will allow a separate window to open and sort or edit the spreadsheet normally.

I've also edited the physical size of the spreadsheet to better accommodate lower screen resolutions.

I can't figure out if the spreadsheet is THE list, or if I am supposed to be looking at the individual posts by everyone. If everyone is supposed to put their items into the spreadsheet, then that isn't articulated very well (just my honest opinion). I love the idea, it is something that we did on a car stereo forum a long while back and it was handy being able to get rid of and get in small items that you only need 1 or 2 of (when they pack them in sets of 50 or more, for instance).

I would love to see this expanded to other tool types.
Also, I would love to know the location of the posters, as I personally need 14mm and 1/2 shallow sockets to replace in a small tool set of mine, but I really could care less about the brand or that they absolutely match the set. Because of this, I would love to ping the person closest to me, lowering the burden that much more.

I agree that the spreadsheet idea is not conveyed well on the thread.
It's Toulson's thread.. I'm not sure if there has been any discussion, beyond January, on if the spreadsheet idea will stick.
i just reviewed the spreadsheet. -- i'm amazed by how much attention and activity the spreadsheet has had.

It's still there... I haven't gotten any requests lately, but for a while I did get an occasional request. I just counted, I've sent 13 sockets and received 1 (big one). Might snag a few more if I get around to figuring up what sizes I want. Most requesters have happily paid shipping.

Basically I cleaned out the local pawn shop of their better sockets when they dropped the price to next to nothing... cherrypicked the lot for myself, then put the remainder in the free socket thread.
