I apologize if this has been answered already, just want a confirmation before I run out to purchase the insulation.

Fully finished garage (9' ceiling), full drywall and insulated walls. There is zero insulation over ceiling in the attic over the garage. I can start with kraft faced insulation, paper facing down. Then if I want a higher R value, unfaced laid across the first layer at 90 degrees.

The unfaced seems to be harder to find in my area, but plenty of the kraft faced rolls. At a min, I want to go with a R30, though R60 is recommended here in NJ.

Thanks.

Sounds good. You only need the kraft faced if there is no vapor barrier already there. You may not find unfaced "rolls" but they always have unfaced batts that can be used for a second layer in the future. Going to do mine today also!

However, blown in cellulose is better insulation. It air seals better, and does not drop it's R-value as the attic temperature decreases. Fibreglass does. It's easier to use batts though. I'll be blowing in cellulose when the time comes.

I have been thinking of the blow in, but want to do a few more rooms when I do that. Probably go the fiberglass for now.

New Brunswick area. Went to 2 different Lowe's and 1 HD they had faced only. I will try a few others if/when I decide to go with the 2nd layer.
