I have small 4 bay auto shop. Right now, the ceiling is just showing the insulation. I want to make it black ceiling. Was thinking about metal roofing? What are my options? Thanks!image0 (4).jpeg

Drywall would be the cheapest route or just add hard foam sheet insulation and paint it your color of choice, silver or white would make the shop brighter but you'll need to keep it clean, black makes the shop darker but hides the dirt/soot/exhaust grime.

Kevin did a black ceiling but he chooses not to post any more. I'm not sure if his garage thread is still intact for pictures.

My opinion, definitely not black, as lite as you get get it to reflect as much light as you can. Worked as a tech for 47 years and a shop can’t be too bright.

I agree with the white opinion

but I have seen a lot of black painted ceiling tiles in a number of places
you just need a ledge at the bottom of your cross pieces to set them on
they would be easy to replace if you decided it was too dark

Metal roofing metal is a great choice for ceilings. Not the cheapest but looks great. I just did my 40x60 with 12 1/2 foot ceilings. I went with 20’ panels which were a little tough to handle with 3 people.

Look up "liner panel". Ultimately if you want black, go for it. Needing to add some lighting is far from the worst thing in the world. Looks like a lighting update is probably justified anyway.

Whatever you choose, a finished ceiling would definitely help appearance and make the space feel nicer.

Cool vibe but everyplace that I have been with a black ceiling means I have to use my iPhone to read the menu

White has reflective properties- so you’re not adding to the budget for more lighting.

As far as material, I would take whatever material gives me the best benefits- drywall. Not only is it “cheap”, but it probably has the best fire protection AND sound attenuation. Shops are noisy places to begin with. I can only imagine what they’re like with a metal ceiling(?).

Sheetrock, fire tape, paint black.

Appears to be a commercial space, that means the fire marshal will walk through periodically. Just do it to code.

yeah. Usually bars and nightclubs. Not a shop where every bit of light you can muster is a useful thing.

around here black widow spiders are attracted to car parts, garages, and black surfaces. Nothing like the feel of one of those sticky crinkly webs hanging between the ceiling and a tool box.

That would be a hell of a web. Ceiling looks at least 13 ft high

I have an exposed ceiling in my basement garage I recently painted flat black. Hides everything and doesn't impact light. Yes black is not reflective, but the lights are pointed at the floor not the ceiling.

Used dryfall paint. It was $80 forna 5 gallon bucket and it covered the space.

I was open to all different options. Yes white would reflect lighting but most modern shops are using black ceilings to hide all the grim from everyday work. New lighting was going to be installed so that’s not an issue. Thanks guys!
