Ah yes, ranking batteries based on very little actual use and only based on what he "sees" when taking them apart. Real scientific there.

Things I don't really care about: Whether or not AvE "thinks" the gearbox is "skookum". Yeah, you can get some sense of the tool's "quality" through a visual teardown, but all of the major brands do serious engineering to make sure their tools will last.

And serious cost cutting to compromise that engineering.:spit:

I realized the guy was brilliant when he cobbled together a computer controlled machine a couple a years ago for a specific task - I can't even remember what it did, but his thought process was totally innovative.

Did you see him make his own ventilator machine when Covid started? Of course now we know that ventilators should be avoided if possible, but we did not know that then. He came up with the idea of building a ventilator that could treat hundreds of patients that was stunning.
Not really impressed by any of that. Micro-controllers (in his case, an arduino) are ubiquitous today, and people have developed toolsets that make programming them almost as simple as typing plain English. I've seen 6th graders write working programs after just a few days of basic instruction.

An "idea" for a ventilator is useless unless it actually works and does things correctly. There were hundreds of inventors coming up with ideas for ventilators, but almost all of them had major issues that would prevent them being used for treatment except in a seriously last resort kind of way. Of course, AvE now is a "covid truther" and says it's no big deal.
This is bit off the topic of tools, but he is completely bilingual . Travelling through the western states, I'm struck by how much Spanish is used . We in western Canada almost never use or hear any French, and we are officially bilingual. This is light hearted question and please don't get your knickers in a knot, How's your Spanish? Right, just as I thought, as good as my French.
What does him being bilingual have to do with anything? Being bilingual is not a sign of intelligence or any other type of capability. It just means you most likely grew up surrounded by (and still frequently use) both languages.

Anyone who is successful in what they do is going to be disliked...its simply human nature. The fact a few boring old men on a forum find him to be boorish, offensive, unintelligent, etc has little to no bearing on reality...or AVE's bottom line.

I will continue to watch, and enjoy, his videos. Ya'll can have Project Farm.

I really hate this idea that if someone is successful, the only reason why anyone could dislike them is because they're successful. There are plenty of extremely popular YouTube creators I love - Tom Scott, This Old Tony, Techmoan, and I've watched them go from 1,000 subscribers to 1 million.

It's like saying the only reason why anyone would dislike McDonald's food is because they're the most successful burger chain in the country. ...or maybe someone doesn't like McDonalds because it's awful, garbage quality food meant to appeal to the masses by being cheap and fast?

I loved AvE back in the day, but he's nearly unwatchable now.

I am sure there are a ton of folks who can't stand the folks you like. I am on that list for a couple of them....I find them boring to to the point of nearly unwatchable.

I like AVE for the same, and yet completely different, reason I adore anything Adam Savage does. neither are a boring old pocket protector wearing nerd...and they make what they do entertaining, even if there are not always 100% correct...

i agree AvE has gotten a bit tiresome and sometimes it seems his explanation are pure BS. So i don't watch him that much now not to mention he has resorted to doing a lot of "fill" content.

Project Farm I don't always agree with. I would like it if in some cases the feedback he gets from the manufacturers was addressed. But he is pretty independent and doesn't have any sacred cows.

I watched a few of AVEs videos years ago and found them fairly informative- in a non-scientific "this looks like …" way ; but after a few more views I gave up. I'm definitely not offended by cursing, I do waaay more of that most, but there is a place for that- and it's not sprinkled in unnecessarily in a tool review. And speak English. Or Canadian-English. Not ghetto-Canadian, or whatever he totally overdoes. It's not funny or entertaining to me, it's just too annoying, but I guess it works for him. And I guess I'm in the minority that won't watch him, but whatever.

Project Farm does not annoy me like he does so I will occasionally watch one of those.

What was impressive was not the microcontroller. That's simple. What was impressive was his unique take on the mechanical design - it was simply brilliant. I'll have to look up the video again.

And as far as the ventilator goes - he studied enough to know and calibrate for Peep and other factors. Me I just went and bought a couple ventilators.

AvE is great..
If you are offended by him you are probably one of those guys who has perfectly clean tools with no scratches on em..

I take him as a field mechanic, make it work by any means necessary, rather than a restoration mechanic to make things absolutely perfect back to spec..

Have got some good tricks from him like how to make a bolt into a tap and use copper wire as a sealant..
