The Wilton is a 4" wilt o matic. The little Starrett weighs 190+# and is near mint with no hammer marks on the beam. It was purchased in 2002.

6" wide and deep they open to 9" It's 27" long and 15" tall. The beam is 2-5/8" x 4" The finest used vise I have ever seen. I have had some friends look at it. These men buy from me all the time. They drooled over the size and quality of a used vise. One guy said I will never find another vise this clean again. I believe him...

The sad part, for me, is that it's probably worth what you're asking for it...

I own a Starrett 925, so I like them...

No I bought it used yesterday. It was in a factory upstairs bolted to a bench. It was off the shop floor and virtually never used. I have had many vises and he that said that has bought many from me. Only very clean and unusual ones. This was just to big for him but he loved it no less.

Very nice... That's close to retail price, but I'm sure you will get it eventually. It is a very clean vise for sure. I like how the swivel jaw bolt is threaded, why didn't they think of that 100 years ago?

Not too much more than the NOS from KBC Tools' 926...

So they still sell them? I thought they quit making them in 2002 when this was bought? The vises see on the net are 1800.00 that have these dimensions. They don't have the swivel jaw and are not Starrett's. I know he paid over 1500 for it. After the auction he came up to me and with tears in his eyes talked from the heart. He lost his business and it all just sold before his eyes. His life was gone as he knew it. He was glad it was going to a good home. I guess he liked me.

No the 926 is not a swivel jaw, it's just the regular 6" version.

Like I said, I'm sure you will get your asking price eventually... Just takes the right buyer. ;) Finding one like that is rare for sure.

Yes I can ship it. I will need to build a pallet bolt it down and stretch wrap it to keep moisture off of it. The find a freight co. We have many near me in tol. t will weigh 200+ for sure.

If you do ship it, it might be cheapest to send UPS. Just pack the slide and body in separate boxes. UPS will ship up to 150 per box for reasonable $$$. My old Starrett catalog lists the shipping weight as 202 lbs.

LowFriction I wouldn't say you are wrong because things could have changed a bit since I last checked on shipping big items. I remember a couple years ago I sold a "little" 105 pound dumbbell to a guy in Chicago and UPS didn't want anything that big. so I went to Fed Ex and the buyer paid the $150 to ship it after I set it in an old tool box and duct taped the heck out of it. it did arrive safely and my buyer saved about half of what a new one cost because he misplaced one out of his nice set in a move.

I have seen most the huge vises that VA and others have had shipped always arriving on pallets so you might PM them to see the costs and what shipping companies they use. check the vise thread the last month and I think VA and another member or two posted pics of vises on pallets.

FedEx will do up to 150lbs, but yeah it does cost some coin and you have to really box it up well because it rides in the truck and is handled just like any other package. UPS I think is a *little* lower in weight.

LTL freight is usually around the same cost, but they tend to deliver faster and you can ship it all in one piece. I've used FreightQuote a couple times, they find the lowest price and also help you figure out the shipping "class" for your item and such.

I'm curious, how the heck does one misplace a 105lb dumbbell? :headscrat:

i'm guessing the movers either left it or kept it for a little light lifting in between jobs. in any case he paid $300 total for it and new cost was twice that. of course I asked if he curled them and he said hoping to, but currently using them for standing squats.

I think he was an Olympic rower on one of those long fancy boats with the guy yelling at them to row your *** off.

LF: that's good to know because i'm usually heading out the door in my Honda to pick one up and paying for a couple tanks of gas. was that in one box or two or three?

The ups ships up to 150 I know this for sure. It will need the same amount of insurance for both packages. That will cost some money. I will see how much and go from there. I also will have them box it up because we are snow covered and icy out side. I don't want to drop 120 lbs on my body. The only place I have to do this is outside.

how much did FedEx charge you and any pictures of the packing you might of took before you sent it? I don't know if i'd risk shipping a nice anvil so you must have had it packed pretty nicely.

during the Union breaks did you take any pictures of the packing operation so some of us less professional packers not quite in the union yet can see?

by the way when you do get the price from FedEx or UPS can you tell us the total bill just for the 2 boxes shipped? and are you shipping to US or Canada?

glad to hear you found another good home for this nice vise

I thought about pictures but never took any. I will try to take some the anvil if it ships. The packing of this will be similar to the vise. It cost about 210.00 to ship two insured boxes 10 of the cost was home pick up by ups. I was tired and happy to be almost done with this extremely heavy job. And photos just seamed like more work on a tired body. I used foam and stretch wrap to hold the foam in place. I just try my best to make a cube from what ever I need to ship. sit it on flat cardboard and cover the cube then tape.
