Hello everyone,

Just got some news that I'm going to be an uncle to a blue collar baby boy!!

Yep, I just got some news that my sister and the bro in law are having their first kid and its a boy! WOOOHOOOO. The bro-in-law is a structural ironworker and is an all around craftsman. We share a lot of interest and one is working metal (I do some blacksmithing in my free time) and Im putting together a care package for the little fell and already picked up a sweet vintage leather toddler tool belt and one of those mini Klein canvas buckets and I would like to make a novelty welding shield for him so when he is born we can take some really cool family pictures (obviously safely) and I want your guys opinion on what the best material would be to make him a shield that is not only realistic looking but functional (safety Sallys please refrain, he won't be in any harm) I was thinking about molding kydex or wet forming leather, what do you guys think?

thanks in advance.

Congrats.
Either Kydex or leather would be cool. I would make it match what y’all have

The truth is you could make it out of cardboard and paint it black (like the huntsman). Or make it out of thin sheets of plywood, fill the corners with putty, then paint it black.

You're way overthinking this. Actually, ideally, you'd make it out of black craft foam. Go to your local arts and crafts store. Its just a prop. Watch a couple of Adam Savage's builds...or some of the cosplay prop builders videos. It just has to LOOK right, not 'be' right.

If you know someone into 3D printing, that would probably be the easiest way.
