The shop looks good. Are going to place some stepping stones outside the doors?

Are the steps from the house anchored to both the house and patio?
I'll probably eventually pour aprons but nothing for now. Maybe some class 5 to ramp up to the big doors.

The steps are only attached to the house. They just rest on the slab.

Got the paint done this last weekend and I must say. I really like how it's turned out. Hopefully get a little more time to finish up the door this weekend, slap a few lights on the exterior for looks and that's probably the end of it for this year.

I got started on the doors over the week and a half or so. Probably about 4-5 hours in or so and I'm almost ready for stain. I decided on leftover LP SmartSide 5/4x4 trim boards as the frame, osb backing, and 3/8 Pine panel siding for the outside panel, trimmed out in cedar. Inside the frame I form fit 1" foam board.

The idea is that using mostly exterior grade, manufactured products and thin panels to hopefully reduce the chance of warping. Also the foam core should help resist warping as well. I'm not sure if the LP trim is going to be as rigid as I want it to be but the doors feel pretty solid right now.

The doors are built with a half-inch gap all around and between the doors. Although I think I may have actually cut them a hair smaller, it's better to be too small than too big on shed doors. If they're too snug you won't be able to operate them individually and I can fill any gaps with jamb trim and weather strip.

Cut my panels to size, cut the trim boards to frame it, glued and screwed with triple-coated deck screws.

Foam core cut to fit. As best I could :lol2:

Cedar trim to make it look nice-ish. I was one board short for the cross member.

Seems like most complaints with outswing doors are having to shovel them out in the winter, and snow and ice building up on the threshold making them difficult to open and close. I fit the bottom member with a 1" overlap that will protect the threshold from getting any ice and snow in it. The doors will mount to the 5/4 trim that already overlaps the foundation and threshold. This should leave about a half in gap on the overlapping trim boards that I can just fill with weatherstripping or just leave it and seal it at the bottom of the door.

I also cut a 15-degree bevel on the bottom rail and the vertical stiles to match. I've read that most rot on the trim comes from water pooling on flat horizontal surfaces. I didn't bother at the top because it's so close to the eve and there's drip edge over it I don't see it being a problem. But it would be easy enough to do after the fact. I'll do the same with the cross bar when I pop it on later today.

The new finish on the shed looks great. I’ll go back and reread your description on the door construction later when I have time. Which side of the building gets the most weather in your area?

Probably the one where the double doors will be [emoji23]

That faces North East. The west side is really protected and we tend to get the bad stuff swirling in from the north east.

Been a little slow in progress this week but I did manage to get the doors hung. They look pretty damn good. I just need to work on installing the stops and sealing them up and installing some latches over the next week or so and I'll be able to get this baby it's final inspection!

Finished up the door stops, and scheduled my final building inspection for later today! Obviously there's more work to be done from an interior finish standpoint, electric etc. But it feels good to have it wrapped up in plenty of time for Winter.

I'm hoping the inspection goes good and I'm done with the city. Also I'm hoping to get a few more odds and ends before the year is out, gravel aprons etc. But here's where it sits for now.

Thank you sir! I think it's roughly 150ft from the back corner of the house to the front corner of the new building. It's not a bad little walk. I wanted it to sit far enough away to sort of be moderately hidden from the back yard and it's nicely tucked behind some trees.

For reference, here's the view from a 2nd story bedroom. Please ignore the rough fall yard and the ugly white pines.

One thing I would do despite you are still on flat ground, is eavestrough and down spouts....get that water and snow melt away from the perimeter!

Those barn doors would look even better under a lean to, hint hint!

I see the photos but the new doors are in the shadows and they appear to be darker at the bottom. Any chance you can take a photo from a different able or time of day and post.

Any chance of rain splash back against the doors?

This is the best I can get for now. Unfortunately the sun path this time of year is brutal. They're pretty uniform, it's just getting a shadow cast from the eaves I believe. 39b1db905bd5a9a146d930113f979c8f.jpg

Just to keep the splash off the siding? I'd like to avoid gutters if I can, don't care for the look. I figured I'd give them a year or two and see how it fares.

I love the look of those doors. Great work.

Thank you! I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. They're certainly not as weather-tight as a pre-hung manufactured door, but they were also about 1/8th the price. I couldn't find anything in that size that would've been less than ~$1500-2000 and I would've given up 6" of height as well. Which would've probably nixed that door as a tractor door for my 1026r.

I'll probably revisit some of the weather sealing but I think I can probably tighten them up a little better. With that said, so far they're rock solid and heavy.

Ahh wood shed. Now that is something I need to build. We have been cutting down a lot of Ash trees as they are going to die anyhow with the Emerald Ash Borer and they were in the way for our garage build that I sent you a link to on the other forum.

One thing I did off this site was use it for my lighting plan. It looks like you are doing electrical next year or so but I used this thread for figuring that out.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289441

If this is more storage than workshop, it is less important but it is nice to have good lighting. Mine turned out to almost be too good in that I didn't install all the bulbs. It is crazy bright in there.
