Maybe a spray foam/traditional insulation combo. I would want spay foam between the living quarters and the garage portion for an "extra" seal.

TDomingos, yes we are building on the West side, left at the cemetery “Y”, then way up on top.
Most traffic comes from all of the people who love to come spend their money on all the things the Central Coast has to offer: Wineries, Concerts, Fair, Lake, Beaches and of course all of the Breweries that are popping up left and right!

I got another week and a half stuck in Dubai before heading back home to continue the build.
Reserved a second scissor lift, a 4X4 diesel as to work the roofing material, facia and siding on the dirt around the building. Also ordered some new components for my scissor lift as to remove some of the safety bypasses I had put in place to temporarily get by. (Control joystick, hyd hose)
Should be like Xmas morning when I arrive as I have everything from a new pressure washer to hammer wrenches to pneumatic rivet guns waiting at the house!

Will be back at home this Thursday and will be trying to figure out how to get my scissor lift around in the mud to install eave pieces and roofing. Go figure in California the only time it rains is when I am ready to get home and go to work on the project! Over 4" in the last couple of weeks which is a lot for where we live.
Installing a ton of the smaller crossmembers and facia pieces and finding multiple issues with holes being in the wrong place and some missing pieces. Armstrong Steel gets away with a lot of this by stating on every blueprint that “Field modifications may be required”. I get it within reason but there is no recourse on them making it right
Now have complained enough to them that there is not much of a chance of them sending missing facia pieces. Does anyone know where I can purchase a couple of 17’ 11” 6/12 pitch galvanized facia pieces?
Also I finally got back a quote yesterday on spray foam insulation for R-35 on Roof, R-25 on walls and R-19 throughout the shop. Put down your beer and have a seat ————————————-$42k—————————————-REALLY? Is this normal as I can buy the complete banding method for under $10k but of course then requires labor for us to install.

Made some good progress today on main Barndo structure after getting through Xmas. Have a few days of work before rain is expected so hoping to get a roof on in the next 2 weeks.
In addition, trying to do another quick Sandcar run out to Dumont or Glamis dunes over New Years but timing is tight with all goin on. Dumont Pic attached of our last trip with thousands of RV’s in the distance for an understanding of why we love to dune!

I've got a buddy with two Tatums. We take these, ATVs and/or side-by-sides to Silver Lake in Michigan. We've always wanted to head out west and see what you shared in your pic. If we ever do, I may have to get ahold of ya.....might need a tour guide and a base station!

Have you thought about renting spray foam equipment and attempting DIY? $42k seems exorbitant.

Jeeze, you could probably frame the entire structure with 2x6 stud walls inside the steel & install R30 rockwool for that.... AND drywall it.
Yeah ZRX thought about that but once again I am throwing money at labor and 2X6’s along with taking away sq footage from the home. The ceiling will be easy as we are putting metal sheeting on the ceiling, adding R35 insulation on top, laying out a moisture barrier then the roofing sheets on top of that. All available at Lowe’s and easy to install.
As for the walls, this is where it gets a little tricky. Just need to acquire some sort of hanging hardware for the insulation within the walls. Lots of windows so really the wall between the shop and home is the biggest task to insulate.
Kind of looking at doing the shop at a later date at this point as to keep the project moving forward.

Loving all the comments. I can tell you that everyone who comes up to the build drives up the road and when the sudden view of the beast comes into play at the same time the view of the town is, everyone’s jaw drop in awe. Love it and wish the pics could show the actual size and first impressions!
Installed a ton of minor components that seem to go on forever, but also was able to get the ceiling panels installed that are very impressive. With them installed it makes the ceiling seems a lot taller than 30’

Roof panels going on. Slow progress as each panel uses 7 sliding clips for thermal expansion of the roof panel. 25 foot panels are easily damaged so taking our time with the use of two scissor lifts.
Entry way had the tongue and groove ceiling installed first as to support the insulation prior to installing roof panels.

Shorty, massive green tinted glass windows with aluminum frames to match the roofing color and to show off the view throughout the shop and home. Don’t even want to think about the cost of them as most are custom build to fit and must meet the California energy codes.
In addition to that are the 3 glass garage doors with one in the living room and two for the garage.

I just ordered my three glass garage doors, in the same colors as the picture for garage but in clear glass for the living room. (2-18’X14’ and 1- 10’X10’)
The issue was the variety of pricing that would stun anyone. The first quote I received was for $78k. Don’t know what people are thinking outside of them wanting to absolutely take advantage of people who are not in the know! I am so done with dealing with idiots!
I get it that these are high end doors but in the end because of persistence,I was able to purchased the same brand of title 24 energy efficient doors for under $28k.
If your not part of the rich and famous take your time to investigate pricing. It will likely pay you off in the long run.
Ultimately $50k in the buyers pocket that instead of went into the pocket of a high end car salesman! F that!

Away in the sandbox still?
Was in Dubai and got back to Cali just before they shut down the Dubai airport. Been somewhat working from home since so a bit of a pain when it comes to the build. Windows and glass garage doors on order now so waiting for delivery that should be in the next 2-3 weeks with virus delays. Power to panel is set up for May 4th so we’ll see if that actually occurs. Been installing Corten siding but are limited until windows are installed. Lots of rat killing going on as there is a ton of small things to go back and complete.

A few new pics of progress. Corten western rib siding being installed. Waiting on window delivery to complete siding so hoping to receive in a couple weeks. Siding will rust to be more consistent but still have variances in color throughout.
Decided to close in the front porch area to create more of a grand entry instead. Was much easier and economical to build the walls from 2X6’s as they will be covered in Sheetrock on the inside and Corten on the outside. Front of home will have a 36” high stacked rock or concrete board to break up the massive amount of Corten. Have some different ideas using copper bolts to adhere concrete panels if I go that way. James Hardie makes a system called “Reveal” that would give it the “Industrial Modern” look we are going after.
Lastly, you can see in one of the pics the new to me Snorkel lift I bought as the rental rates were adding up and not making sense anymore. Will use and likely sell at the completion of the build.

The Hardie Reveal would be the easiest in comparison to stacked stone. Cutting panels to size and bolting in place with Copper hardware is much less time consuming than real stacked stone.
They have tons of options in the faux stone but not sure I can choke that down just yet. Easy to install but not cheap for something that isn’t real!
Planning on doing a couple sample areas so we can step back and see what direction to go.

Went ahead with the M-Rock Charleston stacked stone in a grey and brown combination of color that goes with both the rusted metal and the window trim. Stuff ain’t cheap but will install relatively easy in comparison to the real stuff.
Was informed that our Milgard windows were shipped yesterday so hoping to start installing them next week along with the flashing so that we can then finish up the siding.
This is the time in a build where its going to get exciting as visually you start seeing progress. Just wish I had more time to stay on it but this work stuff that pays for the project tends to take priority I suppose!

Please show a close up and information on the metal siding. I went back and you already provided answer, Corten. What gauge are you using?

Shorty, you are correct that this raw Corten is best in location of low humidity, rain and away from ocean environment. Where we are is in California where we typically we only get 10” of rain annually but very little humidity. Perfect for this area as we are about 10 miles of the Pacific Ocean and protected by a mountain range.
Will easily outlive me before any issues with corrosion.
